It's official. I'm the biggest donkey in Limerick

I've just got home and I want to kill someone. I really cannot believe what I just did. I had every chance to make the money in the Limerick open and I pissed it away with the worst played Big Slick in poker history.

Blinds are 1000-2000 and I have 22000. I pick up AKs UTG. Now normally this is a raise to 6000 every tiime for me. But a couple of factors made me decide to play it differently. For one there is a lot of preflop raising which might enable me to show a lot of stength preflop by reraising all in and get to see 5 cards which is what I want if I get called. The second is that in 20 minutes the blinds go up to 1500/3000 and if I raise, get called and miss the flop I seriously don't want to have to make a continuation bet when I miss 66% of the time so I would have to check fold leaving me in serious trouble. I decided limp reraising would be a superior play and of course the table got suspicious and all folded around to the BB who checks.

Some info on the BB: Earlier when a UTG shortstack went all in he decided to reraise in MP to isolate, putting half his chips in the pot preflop with JQo!!

The flop is 2-8-8. He checks to me and I bet 3000. After some thought he moves all in. Calling would leave me crippled with 6K.

Dear oh dear! To cut a long story short I really believed I was good and called. He had 10-8 and I go out 25th the next hand.

I play great poker for 7 hours, put myself a great position to make some decent money and break my bad run in the IPC supersats and I piss it away calling a check raise all in postflop with Ace high on a paired board.

    I suck

    Unlucky Nicky.
I fancied you for the doh. Tom and Oscar are through to final 20 players. The Munster Cup will be held next May, a bigger event, if that is any consolation.

    1. Nicky - you know I play in Limerick sometimes and that your statement is totally false. There are loads more donkeys worse than you ;) UL

    2. C'mon someone, any chance of a report on how Tom and Oscar are doing. Stick a bit more meat on the statement Fintan. They are Boards.ie lads after all.

Maybe you should print this out and distribute it around the limerick poker scene. Might lead to you being threatened less often with hurleys! :o

Knocked out myself in 22nd when I raised with AJ on the button and walked into AK in the BB.
I was surprised you discounted the BB having the 3rd 8 straight away. Your hand was suspicious with the limp in utg and even if the BB didn't pick up on this straight away, he certainly new about it when your friend with the baseball hat across the way said it was. So a check raise total bluff here was unlikely.
You going to cork in 2 weeks?

I totally agree with you. He'll have the 8 there 90% of the time. The JQ hand completely threw me and I also need to go and burn Mike Cairo's book of tells.

I'll be in cork for the 250FO on the Sunday but I have plans for the rest of the weekend.

Don't beat yourself up Nicky. You played well  but the cards just went against you at a crucial time. You probably needed to risk all with the AK.

AK can be difficult. It's often all-in pre-flop or fold if you don't hit the flop.

In the €400 Hold Em at the Merrion festival I had AK diamonds after the break. I had 12000 (starting 4000). A bet of 2500, two callers. Like an idiot I flat call, don't hit the flop, call a bet from Juha Helppi, and check it to the river. Lose about 6000 for being a wimp. He had 77. Local player Goran said at the next break "You let him kick into an open goal". True. :o
In the 2004 WSOP seniors I had AK. The player before me opened for twice the blind. I threw it in. I guessed he had a pair and I needed to improve. Flop AK8. He bet, called by one player. He gave a free card on fourth street. Ten on the river. He bet, was raised, he called. He held pocket 88. Other player JQ for Broadway (top straight). Apologies to all Dublin boards.ie members who have heard this from me many times.
But on PokerStars last week I held AK and the flop was AKK.
    It's a difficult hand.

I think Nicky if you've decided to go with this hand you might as well just stick it all in. I mean the main reason for not sticking it all in like that is because you might run into a monster, but since you've already decided you're going over the top if somebody raises you'll run into this monster anyway. If you jam it in it means you will get five cards, and also you might find some donkey calling you with AQ or something. I know it's not the most sophisticated play in the world and it absolutely reeks of AK but at least you won't find yourself with a decision on a flop like that. Anyway, flat calling here is a huge mistake.

I agree. All in preflop was probably the best play. I can' only worry about being called by 2 hands and I can increase my stack by 15% if I take the blinds.

Don't beat yourself up. Put it down to a bad day at the office. As Howard Lederer says, "Forgive yourself for all the donkey plays you have ever made and then forgive yourself in advance all the donkey moves you will make in the future"

I think all in preflop is viable, but flat calling was fine too for a few reasons. In fact you played the hand really well bar the call on the end.

Maybe so. I really don't know what convinced me I was ahead postflop. He was just one of those eratic player that you knew was getting out of order and really wanted to take out. He was grinding his teeth so hard in this hand. I thought his teeth were going to pop out onto the table. I really though he was making a move. I guess I can take comfort from the fact that I will learn from my mistake on this occasion. Horrible, horrible call.

Yeah I was pretty upset all right. Don't think I've ever suffered a loss of brain activity like that before, especially at such a crucial stage in a tournament, and a pretty important one for me too. I'm just gona have to go and win the IPC final to make up for it. Nice fookin' deal BTW! :D
