    Hi,
I'm looking for a good quality, good value DVD recorder that can do that Live TV thingymabob, record from VHS videos and whatever other features they tend to have, around the €150 mark if possible.

    Any feedback appreciated:)

Online I suppose try Pixmania and the like. Have a peek in Xtra Vision, they had ones for €200 a good while back when they were a lot more everywhere else. Also Argos have a very cheap Alba one, sorry dont have a catalogue at the minute

The cheapest DVD recorder I've seen is the 4KUS DVR-230 for €120 (ex.shipping) from SVP. I've been reading reviews on it and they're all good.

I don't think DVD Recorders can do the Live TV thingymabob - might need a HDD recorder for that...

You will need a DVD Ram recorder, Hard disk or DVD -rw to do the Timeslip Live TV.

Thanks for the feedback. Well I'm looking for one that does the LIVE TV and is a recorder too, so what would be a good value one to get that can do both does anyone know? :)

I am looking for a DVD Recorder that also plays back .avi files like DivX and Xvid.

I have noticed a few at SVP and Amazon that do this but I was wondering if anyone knows if these machines imported from the UK to Ireland will actually work properly?

In particular if the Tuner inside them is compatible with the Irish TV frequencies???
I would ideally like to just hook the TV aerial into the DVD Recorder and tune in each specific channel to a different frequency.

I remember years ago someone brought a TV back from the UK and the Irish frequencies could not be tuned in.

Should all the UK DVD Recorders on sale now be able to tune in the Irish TV frequencies?

If so does anyone have any suggestions of which DVD Recorder to go for that also has DivX support?

    Thanks....

Well you can pause live TV which is one of the specs you are after.
The simple way to explain how a DVD HDD recorder works is that it records to a harddrive...say you want to go make a cuppa, you press pause, the HDD keeps recording the programme, when you come back with your coffee you press play and the output you're now watching is the recording from 2 minutes ago, whilst the live TV feed is being recorded on another sector of the disc.
Cheaper DVD recorders can't do this for the simple fact that the lens is either recording or playing back to/from the disc.
Aside from that, the HDD enables you to record say, a whole evening of shows and then later burn the ones tyou want to keep to disc....or maybe record a shedload of shows while you're away on holiday.

Personally I think just sticking a TV tuner card in your PC is a better method, unless you don't want the bulk of a PC in your living room...

well it's not for me, it's for a non techie ya see, thanks for the reply, very helpful. So any good deals on a HD DVD recorder out there? I wouldn't know the first place to look really for this type of thing (in terms of what's a good brand, what to avoid etc).

I want a card that i can also link my camcorder to and be able to copy my tapes to my pc from that.

go to avreviews.com, down to the search deelie at the bottom of the page, select 'dvd recorder' for equipment type -> show all = reviews from 'what video' etc.

panasonic are a good brand, the dmr-es10 is seemingly the best entry level recorder, you have to go up to the next price bracket for HD recording though

Just some bog standard OEM no-name brand I got off eBay...it has a philips chipset and does FM tuning too. S-video and composite-in. Paid £25 + postage.
Not got a camcorder but my digital camera does do video and I've hooked it up using the S-video jack for a mess...pretty sure you can use that method for what you wanna do; might want to ask someone who HAS done it though :v:

thanks for all the replies, markR, are you serious? An 80GB DVD recorder that can play DIVX and would it be able to do the live TV thing then since it has the HD? €179, that seems pretty cheap??

Bit pricey and is for a gift (can't really give a 2nd hand gift:o ) thanks for the heads up though:) RobertFoster, are you being sarcastic with the wonderful comment? I can't tell:o

to answer my question, now that I have a look at it, I reckon it's not so wonderful, look at that Zen Touch deal of the week, I mean, it's only €20 dearer than the 40GB version here:eek:  It's sick the way the likes of Dixons actually sell it at that price too, so I'm guessing their DVD recorder prices are rip offs too?

What a horrible looking site....how come it's not as snazzy as their .co.uk one?
Are they trying to outdo Powercity? :v:

edit/ nevermind...it's still in building phase...

I was saying the site is wonderful, sarcastically. I don't know what DVD recorder they're offering - give them a ring and get the model number.
