    ...either untouched or otherwise...

Wait, what? So this can be either a raw jpg or something photoshop/PSP spat out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

    Ok, give it a theme.

Also Closing Date: Sunday 18th Dec 6:00 pm < wtf? Thats ages AWAY, and why so specific.. 6:00pm?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

Shrimp have you got a calendar? Naturally I mean 16th Dec this year not last :D

6:00pm because I will be practicing going to bed early in December in preparation for Santa's visit.

Theme: Autumn, Winter in keeping with the time of year.

As for editing anything you can do with a standard 35mm neg/slide is ok.

Photoshop is not really a test of photographic skill is it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

So cropping/resizing only then....your orig post was a bit ambivalent, or maybe my reading comp is a bit awry today...
Might have a crack at this for a laugh

    I don't get this. What's the theme?

Any photo could be used as a desktop - What would make it suitable for 'boards.ie posters' ?

Edit: Ahhh... just saw your 'theme, Autumn Winter' piece.

Okay, that makes more sense. Don't know how having it as a 'desktop' makes much difference though.

Not all photos work well as dektops. For instance a photo with a lot of fussy detail on the extreme left hand side tends to obscure the icons which are there. But a photo of say a lighthouse, with the lighthouse on the right and a lot of open sea or sand dunes on the left would not be hard on the eyes when looking at the icons.

Like I said it's only a suggestion and seing as people are going to be taking autumn/winter photos anyway why not just put a little twist into the composition to see if they work as desktops.

what does that mean. on top end digital SLR's the image produced is outputted with the intention of it being tweaked in an image editting program. digital photography does include a massive amount of computer skills as the capture of the image is merely the first part of producing a finished photograph

I thought I answeres that already?

    Let's have two categories:

1: Standard film using traditional methods
    2: Digital with digital enhancement

Now just take a few photos its only for fun anyway.
    Display your skills.

Kinda confused about it now...but this is my current desktop photo.

Digital SLR, just adjusted the contrast and darkness. Taken in a REALLY old bus on route to a student protest.

And my old desktop, again, basic tweaking.

For what it's worth here's mine...

    Night.jpg

This is an un-touched photo taken with the cheapest €69 3mega pixel camera from my local supermarket using the built in flash. I just resized it down to 1024*768 for desktop use. The colours are natural. There are 3 blue, white and red uplighters illuminating the statue.

Since I am not sure* what C&C is I'll say yes since you asked so nicely.

Lol, just comments and criticism...not criticism in a bad way though, all constructive.

In hindsight, probly better to wait til after the competition is over!

I couldn't have phrased that better myself. :D

I was thinking of posting them or linking to them in this thread.
Judging from the responses it won't take up too much bandwidth.

Taken in Budapest this time last year..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

I'm confused too. Is Autumn/Winter the theme or will any wallpaperish pic do. I ask because all except the last here don't seem to have doodly squat to do with either season.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

    The theme is Autumn/Winter.

Mine was taken on a cold November evening about 30 mins before it was posted. But then I'm not in the competition. I just stuck it up for the sheer pleasure of doing so.

The lighthouse one could well have been taken on a winter afternoon, the bus I don't know, Budapest is also a winter shot.

If you want to post a desktop style photo please do. But if it's not an autumn/winter shot I can't guarantee any Fame or Fortune.;)

This was taken on a warm Summers day when the thought crossed my mind:" Jaze we don't get scenes like this in the Autumn or Winter. Am I disqualified? ;):p

I know but thats how it came out. Its was taken in B&W mode but maybe the sun over powered the sensors lightning the pic. Just a guess.

    I like it though.

Urf, my camera is away for repairs for the next 2 weeks :/ Hopefully i can get it back in time to get a decent shot for this.

Also I think "make sure the left hand side is ok for icons" is a needless restriction. I have absolutely no icons on my desktop and most "visual" people i know don't either. And back in the old days when i did, i moved them around to work with the background.

You didn't quote the "For instance" bit. It doesn't have to be on the left. Judging by other "here's my desktop" threads elsewhere (no search=no link sorry) a lot of people have a lot of icons. The idea that a clear area be available on the left or somewhere else to make these visible is what makes the photo work as a desktop IMHO.

Has anyone any idea why the link to my pic above works sometimes and not at other times? If you know what I mean.

I'm referring to post number 37 BTW.

I've no idea, mine was doing the same thing so i changed it to an attachment instead.

Also, I just realised my picture is not quite suitable for people with many icons, but i submitted it as i dont have many icons on my desktop..

Here is a photo I took at Bunratty Folk park about a fortnight ago.

Taken using my Nikon D70 , wide angle zoom & circular polarizing filter
and some subtle postprocessing using photoshop (levels, saturation,
    selective sharpening, dodge/burn using layers)

I can resize from the original raw/NEF file to 1024x768 or larger
for an aspect ratio and image size appropriate for a desktop
    background.
