Is the Sempron a replacement for the socket A XP+ chips? I've been looking to replace my 1700+ (on an asus A7V8X) with a 2800+ or higher but cant find them anywhere. Is the Sempron socket A too? How does it fare in comparision to the Xp+ chips?

Dont want to replace the mobo to go with an 64

    Thanks in advance

sempron was origionally brought out as socket A chip and then AMD released a socket 754 version. it is still possible to get socket A chips but they are getting harder to find. komplett has a socket A chip here.
the main difference between sempron and XP barton is that sempron has half the amount of L2 cache.
if you don't fancy spending €75 plus shipping on a 2500 sempron, i suggest that you buy an athlon xp off somebody in FS forum.

edit: just to clarify: socket A is being completly phased out by AMD, within the next 6 months i think it will be impossible to buy any new Socket A chip. semprons will still be sold as socket 754 chips but the 754 and socketA semprons are not interchangable.

Make sure your motherboard supports A sempron too.

Seen that chip on Komplett, but im not sure about the performance of the sempron versus the "old" XP+ chips. I dont know if its worth buying a new sempron or hunting down a second hand XP chip.
the main difference between sempron and XP barton is that sempron has half the amount of L2 cache.

I cant find any benchmarks comparing the two types of chip but generally it seems the XP chips are held in higher regard.

    Thanks

the Sempron's would generally be a speed grade below the XP's, so a sempron 2600+ might be equiv to an xp2400+, and so on.

If your current chip uses a 133mhz FSB, then you might not be able to put a new chip in that board even though theyre both Socket A. You'll need to make sure your motherboard is capable of 166mhz FSB.

thats true, one possible solution tho would be to get an XP-M and perform a pin mod as shown here.
you would have to be carefull tho performing such an operation.
