putting a system together today. I bought a MSI 945p mobo and found for the CPU power it takes an 8 pin connector rather than the standard 4 pin. the power supply i have has a 4 pin plug for the CPU power. Does anyone know of any solution for this? the 4 pin has 2 12V pins and 2 grounds, the mobo needs 4 12v pins and 4 gnds so im thinking of jumpering my existing 2 12v and 2 gnds to make up the 4 12v and 4 gnds..... good idea or ?

afaik, its not an absolute requirement, and it should work fine without the extra plug. It's there more from future expandability (as intel haven't really released many new cpu's for a while), as apparantly next years chips will also be using the lga775 socket.

Alot of people had this with the 20pin->24 pin changeover, and even when the extra 12v connector first came in, AMD boards had it, but it wasn't a requirement.

it wasnt the 20->24 pin connector problem. it was the other power connector for the cpu. the standard is 2*12v and 2*gnd, a 4 pin connector. My MSI mobo takes an 8 pin connector for the cpu, the 4 pin does plug in ok but it doesnt work. I cut another 4 pin connector that wasnt used in another PC and i wired it up to the Power supply and plugged in 2*4pin connectors and bingo it worked :D so im happy with that

hmm, did you try the connector in the other half? (and sorry, I meant people had similar experience with 20->24 pin that you have with this new 8 pin, just worded it badly :))

I have one on my new PSU (8 pin connector), but both sides are keyed differently, so its weird that you were able to plug in just another 12v line:)

but hey, if it works. What mobo is it?

i got the same type 4 pin connector off an old powersupply when u rotate the connector 90 degrees it will push in ok. i cut the wires a few inches back, stripped them and soldered them in as jumpers from the origional 4 pin and it worked great. I went into PC world and maplin electronics to see if I could get a solution or even a correct power supply today but they didnt have and couldnt help so i was happy when i modified the power supply that came with the case i bought :D
