Stargate really has come into its own look at the sci fi actors it has picked up Ben Bowder claudia black and the delectable Lexa Doig do miss the leater jump suits. With all these good actors how did we get saddled with Beau Bridges

Indeed. And, guest starring, we've had actors from TNG (Marina Surtis), DS9 (Colm Meany and Rene Rene Auberjonois), Voyager (Robert Picardo), and Enterprise (John Billingsley).

I can't, offhand, think of any main B5 actors who'v showed up but generally it's got the folks from all the big sci-fi shows of the last decade at some point.

    But Beau Bridges...

And lets not forget John DeLancie for his excellent recurring guest spot, he was sheer brilliance.

It's nice to see Ben Bowder and Claudia Black back together since Farscape is over. However, Claudia Black is only guest staring and if you watched the last episode on sky you'll know what I'm talking about.

And it was nice to see him again play a character with a bit of an edge after the horrific mangling the bastard writers of Voyager gave his 'Q' character..

Does the fact that they had to resort to getting other popular actors to try regain ratings and disguise their own shortcomings not bother anyone else.

No. Lots of series feature actors well known from other shows - it's hardly a sign of quality, or lack of it.

Oh yeah and I forgot Mitch Pillegi from "The X-Files"...

Yeah but guest appearances are acceptable, akin to John DeLancie, Robert Picardo and Marina Sirtis.

However Browder and Black were clearly a scheme to try and gain ratings.

I think it was more a scheme not to lose ratings when the star of the show quits, and another major character is unavailable for 6 months.

It was a case of they were both unemployed and looking for work, stargate were looking to hire.

Don't forget Armin Shimmerman (Quark) as one of the Nox.

No looking to hire someone to replace Richard Dean Anderson. The fact that Browder was popular was a bonus. As for Black, she had already been on Stargate and they needed someone to take over from Tapping while she had a baby, so she was an obvious choice.

    Hahaha.

    Re-read your post.

    They had to replace Jack.

They were starting a new series without Jack and Carter...as if the show hasn't lost enough popularity, this could have been the final nial in the coffin.

So instead of getting just anybpdy (there were a million better routes to take other than hiring Browder) they get two actors who are already popular in the sci-fi community, to try to attract Farscape fans to get into it.

    I don't get it.

How had it lost popularity? As far as I can tell it was still popular and still is today, hence the recent confirmation of a tenth season. Assuming that you are right about it being a desperate attempt to save the show, which I dont think you are, how would taking in two actors from a failed sci-fi show stop another sci-fi show from failing? Like I have said it was probably an added bonus that some Farscape fans may have started watching SG-1 but most Farscape fans would have already made their minds up about the show long before that.

Name one better route than getting an established sci-fi actor for a sci-fi show, bearing in mind that I would bet Browder cost as much, if not less than Anderson meaning that money wasn't a problem. As for Black, I can't see any reason not to take her. She had already been in the show, alot of fans loved her chemistry with Michael Shanks and they wanted to replace one female lead with another.
It all makes pefect sense to me.

I'm with McGarnicle here - SG-1 constantly rated in Sci-Fi's Top 3 shows. That's not a sign of a show in danger of losing too much popularity. At most, it lost a few Nielsen points here and there but in general it succeded well in its key demographics (males 18-30) and was in no danger of being cancelled on ratings grounds. It didn't need a publicity acting stunt.

I read many forums before this season began and, whilst some Farscape fans would check it out now, most already knew that they liked the show or disliked it. And most would realize it wasn't Farscape when they began watching it and wouldn't watch solely for the actors. Ergo, it wouldn't make a huge difference if that was the reason. Instead, Browder surely got by having proved his ability in leading a popular sci-fi show for four years. He worked well in the genre, was able obviously to handle more obscure storylines, and thus would fit into the SG-1 universe well. And Black, as mentioned, had proven popular before after "Prometheus Unbound" and made a sensible return - or would you rather a newbie, or Anise turn up?

I have to agree that SG1 has not dillud in popularity and it says something for the structure of the show that i didn't even miss carter when she was out.

I may be losing this arguement here but I know there are others who agree with me.

Spotted another former sci-fi star in SG1 last week

William B. Davis - was the prior. You may know him as the Cigarette Smoking Man on the X-Files
