Im just wondering if a PSP bought here in Ireland will be compatible with games and UMDs bought in the UK?

Yes, there is no region coding for games. A game bought anywhere in the world will be playable on an Irish psp. UMD movies do have region coding but Ireland and the UK have the same region coding.

And just for the record...literally anything, dvd's, ps2 games, xbox games...whatever, that are uk disks will play on irish consoles...we're in the same region.

Word of warning though - gamesharing won't work between all different region games. US GTA won't gameshare with the EU one for example...
