Off to New York next month. Is it cheaper to buy MP3 players over there? Want to get a couple of them for presents, but is it worth my while waiting till I get there? I am going the week before Christmas so don't want to get home and be short on time to get stuff if they turn out to be quite expensive there.

    Thanks.

Ipods are cheaper over there yes, as are mp3 players, however they are becoming more expensive as is the dollar. When bringing them home, just say you brought them from here, although customs rarely do checks anymore, anyway. While you are there check the voltage of the chargers to see if it is universal, if it is 110v only I'd advise buy a transformer to change the 220v down to 110v when you come home here. Such things would be a rip-off here so ask for the voltage adapter. and remember we use British plugs not European, Check it before you leave the store anyway. Ipods also charge from the usb anyway. Avoid camcorders NTSC is not compatible with our Tvs and they will break your heart, If you want anything in the line of camcorders buy them here. I was highly tempted to buy an IPOD but as i don't have ADSL only sat broadband, i said i'd skip it as i wouldn't have the neccesarry download capapilites to refresh my ipod with new songs every month. There is an IPOD store in Rockaway mall too.

    Have fun in NY!

What ever you are going to buy make sure you research the prices over here so that you are sure you are getting a good price. Throw away the packaging before you travel - although an astute customs official will spot that your gear will have a USA plug on it!

    Just a note on customs.

I arrived back to Shannon airport at 6.30am ish the day after the bank holiday a few weeks back with a bag full of clothers, DVDs, electronics etc from Boston.
No customs officers to be see anywhere near the baggage claim or arrivals area.

One of the news shows over here did a conumer special on Friday night about looking for bargains in NYC. Seemed like B & H ( www.bhphotovideo.com ) had the best bargains, followed closely by J & R ( www.jr.com ).

Remember that B & H shuts early on Friday (2:00pm I think), is closed on Saturdays and so is like a zoo on Sundays.

J&R are great (and huge!) but be careful to avoid the numerous electronics stores in the Times Sq area it's scam/rip-off central there.

I bought a digital camera in B&H photo. Amazing shop compared to what we have here!! I checked out the price over here since and the overall package save me about é100.

Their catalogue arrived yesterday. 420 pages of goodies that I don't need but want so bad!!!
