Six Nations to be held in Croke Park?
    Friday, 18 November 2005 10:08

Could the Irish rugby team play their Six Nations home games at Croke Park?

The Irish rugby team could play their home games in the upcoming Six Nations at Croke Park, according to a report in the Irish Independent.

The report claims that a top level meeting between the GAA, the FAI and the IRFU took place on Wednesday.

Although the meeting was arranged in advance of the fire that has forced the IRFU to close the North Terrace, the closure of the terrace has thrown up the idea of the GAA offering Croke Park for the Six Nations.

Should a formal request be made by the IRFU, the GAA would have to decide if the request is in line with the motion passed that would allow Croke Park be opened to other sports during the redevelopment of Lansdowne Road.

Whether or not the repair work needed to make the North Terrace safe again would be considered as 'redevelopment' remains to be seen.

Ireland's first home game of the Six Nations Championship takes place on February 4, when they will host Italy.

    :D

this would be fantastic - however i really dont listen to any of the independents reporting on the IRFU/FAI and GAA talks anymore. they tend to make so many wild leaps and crazy accusations that its insane.

Would be a great idea to play the six nations there. Easier to get tickets for the match's and the IRFU would make more money because of the bigger attendances and the GAA will make money out of it aswell so they should let it go ahead

They had a similar story prior to Ireland WC qualifier v Switzerland last month, saying the use of bucket seats in the terraces could constitute 'development'. That was a total non-story, this one however may have more to it seeing as a meeting has taken place and the North Terrace is out of action.

If original plan was to start the demolition of Lansdowne in 12 months time. If the North Terrace is too costly to repair, and the GAA can get assurances form the Gov, IRFU and FAI that they will be expedient in pursuing the legal requirements (planning etc) for starting work on a new Lansdowne then I can see the GAA opening the place to rugby next spring.

The FAI will not have a competitive game until next September at the earliest so they will have plenty of time to discuss floodlights etc with the GAA prior to playing soccer in CP.
