Sorry, but it looks like search isn't working again...

I haven't been keeping up with this new fangled DVD technology at all. I think with most DVD drives either the drivers or firmware or something allows you to change region about 4 times or something, right?

Are most drives crackable to be changed as often as you like or anything?

Also (I'm planning on getting a DVD/CD burner), I remember figuring out for some reason that I want a drive that can write using the RAW-DAO method. That was a long long time ago. Do virtually all drives these days support that?

Not really answering your question, but do you use DVDRegionfree software? I think it's better solution than messing with the firmware (esp. when the drive is new).

I can say that both the plextor drives I have support RAW-DAO and one of them is 3 or 4 years old.

I don't use DVDRegionfree software. I don't have a DVD drive. I never have. All the software I've ever bought was on CD, and I don't watch movies on my PC. I'm going to buy one soon with my new PC though, mostly for backup purposes and because they've become so cheap.

I think Plextor is out of my price range :(

NEC are generally some of the easiest to crack for region free purposes.

I have done that with both of my drives (NEC 1300A & 3540A)

For nearly every DVD firmware try these guys

Thing is ... If you dont know much about DOS or cant afford to buy a new drive if you mess up then dont do it. Use something like DVDIdle or similar software.

If you arent going to be watching DVDs on your machine there is no need to go region free.
