What is the best Non-SLR Digital Camera out there in people's opinions?

Is there any particular one that stands out from the rest, with high MP, loads of settings and still quite small?

Get a Canon G6. Look at my gallery in my sig, all those photos except a few at the end were taken with it. It's a fantastic camera, very small and 7.1 mp , and has loads of features. Practically all the features of an DSLR

the main this i love is the size, I would recommed this to anyone! do check it out.

    then again, whats ur budget?

Its still a little large, I had a sony T7 and it got wet, So I have an Insurance cheque coming for about €500 (I only bloody paid about €370 for it!) I found the sony a bit slim on options (max 400iso etc), I did see the Sony N1? although Im tempted to move away from sony. I dont want to loose the small form factor as much as that G6.

    Anyone else?

Ah ok, you mean like that kinda compact. It's just that the Canon G6 is actually categorized as a Compact Digital Camera, and to be honest in comparison to other cams in it's field it is very compact.

The SONY Cyber-shot DSC-N1 is pretty good, but to be honest if you are going to want all these extra features you may have to sacrifice size. May I ask if there's a reason you need it to be so small, if there isn't really a practical reason then maybe you should consider different cameras.

Im going travelling for two years and It has to be small enough for my pocket. My girlfriend has a Film SLR that I use now and again and I love the choice of setting's it has, I understand that a Compact Digital cant be compared, but Im looking for something that is as good as they get for that size.

canon ixus range are very good. Have a look into them. I had an ixus 40 for a while before i went SLR, and they took great photos. Small enough to put in your pocket too.

"the best non-SLR" is very much dependent on your requirements - seems you want small but well featured.

You wouldn't go wrong with a Canon IXUS. I'm still very happy with the IXUS 400. You do get control over ISO, exposure, white balance, but no aperture or shutter speed priority. The S70 or S80 would have better image quality and control but are more belt size than pocket size.

Think I'd recommend the Casio EX-Z750. 7MP + good photographic control and good reviews and the MPEG4 video is great for taking video clips without filling up your memory card. EUR330-ish from pixmania or technikdirekt. The EX-Z500 or EX-S500 would be variations on a theme - stylish and small but well featured. Sony and Pentax have nice ultra-small cameras too.

Right after reading a few reviews Its a too up between the Sony N1
    n1_front_blk.jpg

    and the Canon Ixus 700

Im probably going to go with the Sony as I already have a 1GB Pro Duo card from the T7, It Seems to be the best and that 3" screen looks very nice for viewing pictures, especially while im travelling and wont be able to view pictures on a PC for long periods of time, The touch screen sounds a bit wierd though?

What are peoples thoughts on it?

Bit late onto the scene but I always like my Konica Minolta G530 (I believe there are much better versions out there now)

It has aperture/shutter priority, full manual control, iso control, flash compensation, rgb channel control, white balance and 15-1/2000 shutter speed.

This isn't a camera that I've tried, but the reviews I've come across make it sound like a very interesting one: the Panasonic Lumix DMC LX-1. By all accounts, it has the most DSLR-like controls of any compact digicam at the moment. However, all the reviews that I've read do say that the noise at ISO levels greater than 100 is problematic.

Anyway, worth a look, but like I said, I can't vouch for it personally.

I got the N1 from the insurance money but my girlfriend is using it as I bought a Canon 350D, Ill have a proper look at it and tell you what its like, what I have noticed is that is has a manual mode (aperture settings 2.8 -5.6) and shutter speed 1/1000 to 30 sec, which is quite good for a point and shoot. The screen size is amazing and the touch screen is very easy to use, focusing under low light is a bit poor, but I have not really used it enough to see if that was the camera or my girlfriend?

Ill get back to you about it.
    Sean.

    just wanna share my thought.

i used to take pics with EOS 300.. a film SLR... i love that cam until i couldn't really afford to waste toob many films... a bit sceptical to go digital few years ago but last xmas got a Fujifilm F11... my first digital camera... kinda loving it... was much more better than my EOS shots... i blame my photography skills... :D

F11 should cost less than €400 afaik... it's actually an updated version of F10, an award winning cam last year, correct me if i'm wrong... there's a thread i posted some pics taken using F11...
