    how's it going?

i'm trying to connect a laptop wirelessly to my desktop with my router/modem linksys WAG354G.

i have both computers connected to a workgroup (MSHOME) and have shared folders that i want to share.

now i go to the laptop and go to my network places >> view workgroup computers >> double-click neil and it says

"\\**compname** is nit accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found"

i'm using the using the laptops built in wireless.

Have you set the firewall on both computers to allow Network Neighbourhood traffic?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 566 ✭✭✭TKK

You may also need to check the firewall on the wireless router.

    ping ipaddress

You can get the IP address by using ipconfig.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 56 ✭✭retrospect

    start-run-cmd (enter)
ping the ip of the computer you want to talk to e.g. ping 192.168.x.x
to find out an ip address us the ipconfig /all command .

So you tried to ping your laptop from your main computer and got a host unreachable error ? Try pinging your loopback address which is “ping 127.0.0.1” you should get a reply this means tcp/ip is ok .do this on both machines .tell me what happens .

no i couldn't find the ip address of the laptop by typing ipconfig /all

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 56 ✭✭retrospect

Did the ipconfig command on the laptop tell you the ip address was 0.0.0.0 ?

well that means they can both see each other,
even if the pings are a bit high.

go to the network connections page on both machines and run the network setup wizard again, now that theyre both connected to each other.
i usually go for a non standard network name such as "home" or "lan" instead of "mshome" just to be sure the wizard runs through fully on all machines.

once youve done that you should be good to go.

    edit///
youve pinged the lappy from itself,
try the ping thing again from the lappy but use 198.162.1.64

sorry yeh i just noticed that, i've changed the above post

so the desktop might be the problem.
do you have a firewall / norton / windows firewall enabled?

try disabling them temporarily and ping again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

yup it works when i turn off sygate/windows firewall and AVG

    pings i get are

    47ms
    20ms
    17ms
    20ms

pings could be caused by the wireless part of the network.
i wouldnt worry about it for the moment.

if the network shares work with your firewall off you would need to either manualy configure it for windows or delete the config file for it and set it up again from scratch.

try the shares before running the network wiz and see how you get on.
