trouble with xbox live

hi i'm having trouble with my xbox live. i can't play games with certain friends for some reason. but then if someone else is on that i can join i can play with the friend i usually cant play with once we are in the lobby with him. has this happened to anyone else? and if so how did you fix it? cheers lads..
