recently a friend moved into her new apartment and wants to get SKY. she has no phone line installed yet as the morans in Eircom are still figuring out how to supply them. what does she need to do to get the normal SKY package install without having to go down the route of being refused because of no phone line. does she need to buy the equipment herself? where would she then get the card? and how would it be activated?

    thanks in advance

Yes. I have Sky without Phone line. Or, I had no phone line when I originally got Sky. Just ring around to a few local installers. They'll help you out.

    Skerries - Dowlings
Swords - Eugene (can't remember his surname, so not a lot of use!)

I know people who went with both of the above, with no complaints.

There's also a relatively new "stand" upstairs in the Pavillions in Swords for another Sky installer. Don't know anything about them.

I believe that you will probably have to buy the box and kit and pay for the install if you don't have a phone line. You have to have the box connected to a phone line for the first 12 months to get the free install and kit.

Most dealers should be happy to do the install with no phone line if you pay for the box and installation.

I disagree. I didn't have to pay for anything out of the ordinary. Straight forward install with no phone line. However, the installer twinned my card to my box at his address and gave me the phone number in case I wanted to ring sky for something.

Yeah, that was no problem a few years ago, but sky have really clamped down lately, only one free offer per phone number and if the box doesn't dial back regularly after installation then the installer doesn't get paid by sky for the box / install.

I don't know much about that but I got my install about 5 or 6 months ago. The installer said that Sky turn a blind eye to the Irish market in this respect as a lot of people do not have landlines but prefare mobile phones.

Anywho, I'm not too up i the ways of Sky so again, correct me if I'm wrong. I can only comment on my installation.

There was a claw back scheme from sky a few years back but this was quickly abandoned when sales plumetted. It demonstrates skys lack of understanding of the Irish market and their failure to listen to feedback from the smaller independents.

Sky have recently (Friday15th Nov) announced to dealers that they now have a procedure in place where you can subscribe to Sky without connecting to a phone line .

Sky are charging dealers €37.50 for this "manual activation" and advising retailers to collect this charge from their customers . Sky have also stated that this facility will not be advertised and is only to be used where a sale is being lost !

No more phone line problems for the present anyway !

Do they insist on the phoneline being connected at some future point?

Sky conducted their own survey twoard's customer's in the summer of this year. It concluded that the irish market makes up for nearly 10% of Sky's own profit's. Irish customer's were very high user's of Sky's interactive service's rather than uk based subscriber's. A massive volume of Irish subscriber's were also on the top sky package(Sky World), rather than uk customer's whom were on a lower package.

I would've presumed as much, paddy, but interesting nonetheless. Anecdotally, I'm surprised by the amount of use SNA gets in my house!

    10% ... wow...
