Do you guys have a particular pickthat you use all the time. Ive been trying loads of different ones trying to find my pot of gold.

I used to use a .46 Jim Dunlop for a long time because I was only strumming.

Now that Ive started getting into lead playing Ive been looking for a heavier pick. I was recommended the Jazz III by a shredder who assured me they are ideal for lead playing. The thing is, I still do a lot of strumming and rhythm work in our songs so need something not too soft and not too hard.

Ive tried many but am wondering have any of you guitarists settled on one pick or do you just use whatevers handy?

I use a variety of 1mm picks, the brand really doesn't matter to me at all, I've got ones by Dunlop, Fender, and some Musician Inc. ones... Doesn't make any difference. I find they're great for lead and strumming, but that's probably just me.

I like the big triangular ones, usually .7 or .8 but basically any pick I can find is a good one;)

I use heavys for bass and heavys (usually) for guitar. Picked up some of these the other day hoping to play some really creepy bass, but they're mediums, so it's to the guitar they go.

Jim Dunlop .65 or so. Cant go wrong. I reckon whats its made of is as important as the thickness, to a point. Nylon is a lot more responsive than the more plasticy kinds.

you see, I tried these Fender see through jobs - thin - and they were perfect. But we had rehearsal last night and 'snap'. First frikken song!

I use jazz III's or stubbies. The tortex ones, about .88, are really nice too, probably suit you quite well.

i use a soft one for bass, .76 (same as mike dirnt) or a 1.0 depending on song

i tend to use the same ones for guitar + maybe a .46

I used my nail for a long time and still do but it wears down :( so I have to use a plec. I like lighter ones for strumming but I have a white one called pickboy (I think) which I tend to use for lead (yeah right!! attempted lead anyway ;) )

I use Yngwies Malmsteen's 1.5 Signature Dunlop Plecs. There great for for lead and strumming.

Glide of the string much easier than any other plecs and makes u play faster.

Got a load of them at his concert last year but running out of them (only 2 left).:(
Lets hope he comes again soon so i can restock.:p

RED! Black Jazz IIIs seem to have a bit of scratchyness on them.

i'm in the same position as Fey, i use the same pick all the time, have no idea how thick it is or what it's made from, all i know is my brother use it before me, and i stole it off him..

If i ever lost or broke it i don't know what i'd do, i've never used a pick as good as it. :(

Ive been using the Jazz III's. There are great for lead but i find them too harsh for rhythm. both feel and sound.

Fussy? Not I, sir....I only mentioned 'heavys' in my post. In fact, one time at a gig I forgot my heavy picks and played bass with a quarter all night!

i use 2 mm dunlop picks on bass but i've been looking for metal ones lately, any idea if i can get these, otherwise i'll try and make em meself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,322 ✭✭✭Maccattack

do you mean like made of metal?

Ive seen some fancy ones in the window of musician. pretty expensive though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭OLP

yeah made of metal, dont fancy spending an actuall amount of money on poxy plecks so i might have a go at making one

I had a couple of stainless steel ones some years back which turned out to be completely useless. Have a brass one knocking about somewhere which isn't as bad for some reason. I definitely wouldn't recommend metal picks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭OLP

did you use em for guitar or bass?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,432 ✭✭✭Steve_o

Dunlop .73mm plecs for Guitars, sholdn't use plecs with bass its bad technique but if u must i'd use a thick plec like a Dunlop 1mm or 1.2mm!!

What? thats a a bit stupid, it depends on what style you play, I can't imagine Lemmy playing with his fingers, i'm sure he can but Motorhead wouldn't sound the same if he did.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

playing bass with plecs is bad technique my ass, its just a different technique. and sound.

    black dunlops 1mm..

nice and soft so i don't drop them!
    but still plenty of bite!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,946 ✭✭✭red_ice

An old credit card cut into shape and burnt with a lighter round the edges and played till it got a sharp ass groove. Have it for 2/3 years now lol.. but when im jamming n what not, i use a Pickboy.75mm made from carbon nylon with a 3d weed plant on the front and back

Just tell that to Chris Squire...and...and....Gene Simmons! (well, ok, Gene didn't actually have 'technique', but he was frikkin' cool!)

    JD .73 or .6

Sometimes a .84 for playing my hollowbody.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 936 ✭✭✭Beecher

Dava control plec! Savage things, the middle is really thin so if you hold it at the back its a thin plec and if you hold it near the front its a heavy plec! Woot! :v:

I personally think that no matter whether ya wanna play extremely fast lead, ladden with pinch harms, or deep warm strums the JD .60mm is yer only man, the SL500 of picks.

Well JW. Funny you say that. since i started this thread I tried a few others and have pretty much stuck to the JD 0.60 lately. Used it last night. Normally id be changing picks all night trying to find the right one. I didnt change once so thats a good endoresment for the 0.60.

I use 1mm dunlop nylon plecs. They never wear down unlike some of the plastic ones that tend to turn to dust.
