BT Zyxel Modem Problem

    Hey all,

I'm having difficulty with my BT Prestige 600 series modem. I used the ethernet cable for a few months with no problems, then updated my nForce drivers, and since then I can't use my ethernet cable - no signal. I'm using USB now, but it times outs or simply turns off after a few hours, (ie - USB light goes out) I'm forced to reset the modem to factory settings and re-enter my login details.

I've contacted BT and they say they can't hep - It looks like a firewall / software is blocking my signal. I'm using Zonealarm and I've turned it off - no improvement.

I'm getting a ping signal return - I re-installed my origional nForce drivers and I've a ethernet presence in my connections. I'm baffled at this point as to what is wrong?!

The way the ehternet isn't recognised at all and the time-out of hang of my USB - I'm thinking it's just the modem now...

    Any sugestions?

    Thanks in Advance...

How about rolling back your nForce drivers and see are the updated drivers causing it.

Also Nforce mobo's generally have 2 NIC cards..
Or it may have the Nforce Firewall built in. Make sure thats setup.

Apologies Diabolus, you've lost me... I've only one ethernet connection on my m/board.

How do I check for a nForce firewall...? I'm using Zonealarm, but would think if I've internet access at any time, it's working OK.

Or are you refering to a BIOS setting?

Tried it already friend - no joy.

It's wierd, I uninstalled the nForce drivers that were bundles with the board (I installed them initially after a recent reformat) then decided to update them afterwards - after all, they were fairly old. I removed them from add-remove progs > restarted and installed brand new nForce drivers.

The wierd thing is my ethernet drivers weren't installed during the new installation, so I had to manually add new hardware and point to the ethernet driver in the nForce directory on my hard drive.

Aren't the nForce drivers self contained - ie install ALL relevant drivers (including ethernet) to ALL nForce boards?!

    This looks complicated.

    1. When u connect the Zyxel thingy does the Local Area Connection satus change to Connected?
    2. IF so do you get an IP address?
    3. IF so can you ping the router? (192.168.1.1)
    4. IF so can you telnet to the Router?
    5. IF so can you access it by Internet Explorer?

Let me know which number you get fuked on...

    1. When u connect the Zyxel thingy does the Local Area Connection satus change to Connected?

In the windows taskbar, a red X shows under a set of monitors - Local Area Connection 4 - a network cable is unplugged. Local Area Connection 4 is my nForce Network Controller

    2. IF so do you get an IP address?
TCP / IP properties in Local Area Connection 4 set as 'obtain IP address automatically'

    3. IF so can you ping the router? (192.168.1.1)
YES - see image attached to post

    4. IF so can you telnet to the Router?
    ...you've lost me!

    5. IF so can you access it by Internet Explorer?
After I reset the modem - ie hold in button beside USB port for 20 seconds and re-enter login details - IE works fine... It just crashes after a few hours with pwr light on / sys light on / USB light on / DSL light on / ACT light on..?!

    Try this:

Ensure that both the usb and ethernet are connected to both the router and your computer.

Open a command prompt, type "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and press Enter. It will return the configuration details of your network adaptors.

From your post above it looks like the router and network card are on different ip ranges. If your router is 192.168.1.1 and your network card has been dynamically assigned 169.254.174.120 by Windows then they are not going to see each other.

Try and manually assign an ip address to the network card.
    e.g.
    IP Address: 192.168.1.50
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

The DNS servers I'm not sure about but you can leave them blank initially. Depending on your version of Windows XP you may have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

Run ipconfig /all again to see the changes have been made and disconnect the usb connection so you only have the ethernet connection between the router and computer.

From a command prompt try to ping the router again and it should now work.

If it doesn't I would think that your network point on your computer is messed up.

If it does work then all you need is the dns entries to get yourself back on the internet.

    Do you have a Dell?
I was having this problem with my Dell, everytime I reinstalled windows it wouldnt install proper drivers for my ethernet card. Check the CD's you got with the PC and look for the stock drivers there. Should sort you out

No - not a Dell - put it together myself with a mate... But never had a problem before... I'm going to try the recommendation above.

Manually enter the IP details as Talisman described.
Did you try a system restore?

Will I proceed with what you suggested?
From the image you posted your usb connection is working but the ethernet configuration is messed up - it isn't picking up the default gateway (192.168.1.1).

    To fix this:
    - Disconnect the usb connection between the router and computer.
    - Right click on "My Network Places" and select Properties.
    - Right click on "Local Area Connection 4" and select Properties.
    - Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the Properties button.
    - On the General tab, click the "Advanced..." button.
    - Under "Default gateways" click "Add..." and add the 192.168.1.1 address.
    - Click the relevant OK buttons to apply the changes to your network settings.
    - Restart Windows just to be sure that the settings take effect.

Now open a command prompt and run the "ipconfig /all" command again. This time only the ethernet connection should show up and it should hopefully have all the correct settings.

    Something like this:

    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.33
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

If you see similar details under Local Area Connection 4 then it's happy days.

If not then try manually configuring the TCP/IP properties of the connection and restarting the computer.

    IP Address: 192.168.1.50
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

I did as you asked - still no joy - I also manually entered TCP/IP properties - restarting both times - still no activity in IE after each attempt.

Quick question, you asked me to enter the IP (manually) as 192.168.1.50 - should it not be 192.168.1.1 ?

Here's a result of a ping and ipconfig /all after I made changes and restarted:

    [IMG]http://www.gardasubaquaclub.com/ip2 2.jpg[/IMG]

By the way; After I added a new default gateway, the ipconfig /all returned as you wrote - but no activity in IE. (after restart)- ?!
So technically it was reading right, but I still had no web activity in IE. By the way, the ACT light on my modem was ON after the gateway addition - Still no web!

No - 192.168.1.1 is the internal ip address of your modem. 192.168.1.150 is the address of the computer.

I'm a little lost as to what you're asking - I reconnected the ethernet, and ran a ipconfig /all - The results are the same as the screenshot I posted.

Do you have another network cable you can try?

No... Do you think I need to look at buying another router?! or do you believe it software based? Would BT have any liabilty if it's hardware?!

I really appreciate you helping me - apologies if it's dragging out.
