Just wondering would a FTV card that has been activated in a UK sky digibox work in an Irish sky digibox ? or are the cards tied to the machine that they are activated in ?

Yes it will work and no ! FTV cards are not married to particular receivers

No, or else page one of the forum would be taken up by stickys.

If someone was willing to write up an FAQ.... then....

Will an Irish sub card give the Irish terrestrials if used in a UK box. Are any of the channels married to the box?

Thanks for that seano. Sorry if the question has been asked lots of times before. The search feature is badly missed.

as opposed to half the page being taken up by repetitive questions Damo? I'm not blaming the posters here but surely theres a better way to help newcomers.

Only the premium Sky and Disney etc are married. The Basic channels and RTE arn't any longer. I get message "Wrong card" on several channels I don't use. Not my original box. But all the Variety and Knowledge inc RTE1, 2 TV3 and TG4 are OK.

Talking about cards and swapping them, a couple of installers have warned me off swapping cards in and out of the one box. They say it will damage the contacts. What do you guys think?
    Thanks.

The contacts are not designed for continual opration. Though it is likely the switch at rear that breaks first (which detects a card insert fully).

It is tedious to swap and also does wear out card and reader if done very often, in which case a second Digibox and Quad LNB is a good investment.

I did have two Sky boxes but both have died (5 years old and need new ZIF tuner modules at £18 each, which I can fit, would be a waste of money), but fortunately got a new one before renewing my sub.

Thanks, Watty. I can get almost all the channels I want using an aerial system (Irish) or a UK card (which I haven't got yet) + FTA. If I hold on to my Irish Sky sub, it will be for the sake of getting Discovery, History, Natl Geographic channels. I haven't decided if it's worth it yet. If I do I will need to swap cards, but I'd probably only swap a couple of times a week.
If I did invest in a second box and quad LNB, is there a simple way of connecting both to the one TV? (because I almost never watch TV outside of our living room). Thanks.

Hmm, the only easy way of connecting 2 boxes to same TV, is if one of them is a Sky+ box. Otherwise, changing channel on one, will also change on the other! Unless one box is in a different part of the room, or if you can close the door on one at a time, to block the remote IR signals!
