I can't see any moon down here tonight, but I did see it last night, and I saw that star you're talking about too... is it the north star?

Is it mars? I had a quick look at it with the binoculars when I was out having a smoke and it just appeared as a small white disc, not unsimilar to the moon (possibly venus?). I thought mars was a more reddish star?
