Colin Murphy Cancelled

    Posters up everywhere. Damn

Reading on his website message board (www.colinmurphy.org) that twas cancelled in a load of other universities as well :
....It has been advertised that I am playing a pile of college gigs, DCU, UL, UCG, UCC etc but no-one actually thought of asking me if I was free to do them, which I am not. The promotors then went ahead anyway and printed up posters with my name included! I AM VERY PISSED OFF ABOUT IT! ...

    and according to his agent:
    Dear All,

I know many of you are rightly annoyed due to the 'cancelling' of advertised Colin Murphy shows at universities in Galway; Limerick; Cork; Trinity; DCU and UCD. So, as Colin's agent, I wanted to explain exactly what has happened to lead to this frustrating situation (not least as a response to the person who feels I am the one to blame for these gigs not going ahead..).

The promoter in question, approached my office in July, to check on various college dates for Colin. He was told that we could not commit at that stage, as we were awaiting filming dates for Colin's various TV projects. In early September, we clearly relayed to the (same) promoter, that Colin was unavailable for the dates/colleges. At the end of September, we found out that Colin was being advertised on the MEAS website as performing at the aforementioned uni's - so obviously spoke to the promoter - and again, reiterated that Colin was NOT available for any of the dates they had him advertised for, and to remove him from the listings immediately. We were told that it must have been due to an 'internal marketing error' and it would be rectified. This was 6 weeks ago. To then find out that not only has Colin still been advertised as performing at the colleges, but that the venues were only being called (by the promoter) a few hours ahead of the scheduled performance time, to pull the gig(s) - is as infuriating for myself and Colin, as for the colleges - and people who brought tickets. We do understand your grievances - but we genuinely never accepted these gigs - as Colin was never available to perform on the dates.

I am in the process of speaking to all the relevant college Ents depts - and wherever possible, we will try and reschedule shows in 2006 for Colin .. this time, booked directly with the colleges. If, in the meantime, you have any doubts before purchasing any tickets for a future college show (other than the Queens Uni ones in Belfast) by all means pls check with us here on either jack@dawnsedgwickmanagement.com or laura@dawnsedgwickmanagement.com

I do hope you will continue to support and go to see Colin perform - and not let a badly disorganised promoter affect you going to future shows.

    Dawn Sedgwick

Which sounds kinda dodgy on the organiser's/promoter's behalf.

But i'm wondering how Trinity ended up with him signed up, seeing as the SU voted last year not to get involved in MEAS at all - so wtf were we at?

Daithi last year raised a motion against being involved with anything to do with MEAS because MEAS apparently have apparently been involved in a few dodgy things thanks to their drink company sponsors or somesuch. if anyone wants to clarify it'd be great cus my memorys a bit shot. if i can find the council minutes somewhere i'll put em up.

didn't most SU's always have a dodgey relationship with drinks promoters?

Luke (desertcircus) and I wrote an amendment at USI congress last year, which added 'except MEAS' to a motion on running sensible drinking campaigns in conjunction with other bodies. Luke gave the first speech and I was the follow-up.

We argued that MEAS was not a responsible partner, because it was fully funded by the drinks industry, and that it was blocking regulation of advertising and sponsorship, and that we should work with doctors etc instead of Guinness hacks. We also gave examples of past problems with drinks-industry-funded groups (like the Portman Group in the UK) in terms of interference with research.

Actually we didn't debate this at Council - it was at Exec and at the pre-congress delegation meetings - but otherwise, yeah I'm one of the responsible persons. What the SU do this year isn't my business, though; our amendment was about USI and Meas in terms of the national welfare campaigns. As far as I understand it, some colleges went with the Meas campaign this year, and others (UCD, Trinity etc) didn't; although they got a Meas-free version from the same promoter. I'm open to correction on that.

are MEAS the crowd who keep on sending text messages on a Friday and Saturday night saying "don't see a great night wasted" ? don't know where they got our numbers from, but everyone seems to be getting them...

Yeah the MEAS free version from the same promoter was what i had guessed - thinking should be a different promoter though after this - doubt many colleges will be dealing with them now after that like.

i never get those texts. do you think meas have spies that know i'm ussually sitting on the couch on a Friday night watching the Late Late instead of vomiting in pubs (or whatever else us young folk get up to while imbibing their pay masters products)?

All the universities had the same promoters, 8 Ball promotions, but we didn't have anything to do with MEAS. So yeah, **** the 8 Ball, I knew those things couldn't predict the future :P

I got a few and they always seem to be right when I'm about to get wasted. Why do I get them more than most people? I wonder if the texts can sense it......

That is the slogan of Diageo. If it is supposed to be MEAS that's even worse. It's blatant advertising for Diageo even though it's not stated. It's at the bottom of all of their ads and people are getting quite used to associating the two.

I don't drink at all so you can imagine how furious I was to receive this unsolicited spam. If I still have the message I'll be forwarding it to Meteor's spam number (I only read about this lately).

Anyone got any info on 8-ball, the promoters of the event? Are they a pet of MEAS?
