I'm runnning Windows XP, dad running Win98 (SE). Both of us are connected via broadband router to internet. What is the best software to allow remote control? If you connect via IP address, what address do I use? IPCONFIG only shows our internal network addresses ie 192.168.x.x ..surely we need to have external IP addresses to connect?? How do i find these?

Have a look at VNC. It's really very good.
No idea as to costs as I only used it in a commercial environment.

Thanks Hagar, I have also used it..i think its free?? I am confused as to what IP to use though..any ideas?? I think the broadband router must have an IP address to the outside world but I only see its internal address..will have to figure this out!!

use www.whatismyip.com to get your "internet" address

be aware that this may change if your ISP is on DHCP. If so you may need to install some Dynamic DNS software and get a free url to "login" at.

For the remote control software, of the free stuff, ultra VNC is the best overall. Just be forwarned that this kind of software is very vunerable if not setup correctly, and TBH with 98 the picking are easy!

at the very least, use the DSM encryption included with ultra VNC
