    What is game editing/how does it work? I'v never heard of it before, but it sounds mad... swelling with potential.

    Pretty much what Ropey said. Small mods can simply be editing a skin or a sound, where as full blown mods can be just using the actually engine of the game only and none of the original content. Most engines these days require a lot of effort just to get something small done so its very hard to make proper mods on your own. Best to join a team as a mapper/modeler/coder or something.
