Can anyone recommend a decent pair of 5.1 Surround sound headphones - for gaming.

Are they any good? Would I be better off with a decent stereo set of headphone - for gaming?

    Cheers

Here's a review of a pair http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/zalmanheadphonesreview.php although as he says himself, surround sound headphones are a bit of a gimmick.

    Thanks Mordeith,

Problem is - I never know how much to trust these online reviews. I'm wondering if anyone out there has personal experience of using them with games (FPS preferably), and if the surround is any better than using good stereo headphones.

    Thanks again

I have a pair of medusa 5.1s from speedlink...definitely NOT a gimmick...great phones, highly recommended for gaming

i have a pair of medusa 5.1 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_SpeedLink.html they r good and do work well (for the price which is about 70eur after conversion and delivery is taken into account) obviously a real set of 5.1 is better but atleast these wont wake up the whole house when u want to go for some midnight fragging :) tomshardware gave it a good review too but cant find the link atm...

The Speedlink Medusa are top class surround headphones. If you're playing FPS games then they are well worth the money. Myself and some other people here have sets and love them. I have the standard set (top item on that link) but there is a USB version as well.

I also think they're fan-diddely-tastic for music as well but a certain moderator is bound to disagree with me ;)

Just what exactly are surround sound earphones ?

At last count, I have 2 ears.
How does 5-point positional audio work with 2 speakers ?

    LOL.

Gurgle: It doesn't use 2 speakers. Each side has 3 (or 4) mini-speakers in it. It really is 5.1. :)

Got a pair of Medusa 5.1 to.
Work great, sound good (not so much for music imo).
Only thing i absolutelly hate about them is they pickup mobile phone signals and it can get pretty loud.

    Jozi

EDIT: do logitech have a pair to??? Macros, Khannie: what does Scrooloose use??? He got a pair to but not Medusa's

I'd hold back for a few more replies.
As much as i'd recommend the medusa headset it go with something else if i had the choice again. Simply for the reason i absolutelly hate how they pickup mobile phone signals. I can get so loud i have to take of the headphones.
But if you can live with that then by all means go ahead and buy them

I only find that a problem if the phone is too close. Put the phone on the other side of the desk and it's grand. Don't know what Scrooloose uses.

    I had a pair of these http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=124207&cks=SPC
but wasn't too impressed with them. Yes, there was a definite surround sound effect, but they were too heavy and sweaty.

another plus for the medusa's is if u already have a nice speaker set and just want to have the headphones for when u cant use them, then the medusa amp thingy has input and output so u can connect up both at the same time :)
