After listening to six months of how spear tackles in rugby will kill you my mind turned to slamming.
Why do takedowns not kill people? Or do they and I just heven't noticed?
Basically whats the difference between a slam, take down and spear tackle that makes spear tackles so dangerous?
For non rugger buggers a spear tackle is where your lifted off the ground, turned around and driven into the ground.

    Hi Dave,

It's dangerous because its very easy to break someones neck\back. Just look at the body position, its plan to see, please tell me your not comparing a spear tackle with a WWF slam. Correct me if I'm wrong a take down someone is usually picked up and driven backwards to land on their back\rear.

In a Spear tackle someone is driven head first into the ground, and if other players are joining the tackler and driving over the damage can be very serious.

In MMA spiking (slamming someone head first like a rugby spear tackle) is generally illegal, although the crazy mofos in Pride allow it.

    Dave,

My understanding of a spear tackle has always been that you lift your opponent off the ground and drop him on his head. Simply lifting him off the ground and slamming iim down is called dump tackling, which is perfectly legal (and cool ;) ). The former is also illegal in MMA competition as far as I'm aware.

EDIT: It appears several people got there before me. I'll read the whole thread next time. :)

Ah ok thanks for the explanation.
Does spiking occur often and how bad are the results? In a rugby game it has to be harder to see things then for an mma ref.

I remember Peewee spiking a guy in a grappling competition.
He was going for a slam and lost control of his opponent and it ended in
a spike. There was complete silence in the hall until the guy started moving 20
    seconds later.It was scary stuff.

End result was Peewee was disqualified, but allowed to compete later in
10-15kgs heavier weight bracket, where he came second to the Clive.
