Hey guys, just letting you know (hope this is ok mods?) that there is a great event being hosted in CORE church on thursday night called "Q and A" - questions and answers.

Its an evening where a panel of believers and non-believers are asked the big questions of life, in a relaxed and open atmosphere.

    This time the panel is:
    - Fr. Peter McVerry; founder Arrupe Society
    - Dr. Paul Heslin; GP & lifecoach
    - Joe Humphreys; Irish Times journalist
    - Fergus Ryan; Leader of Trinity Church Network

For more info (and to book????) please visit www.corechurch.ie

    See you there.
    Paul

    bump... anyone interested?

The idea behind the event (it is run by Christians) is that our Christian faith should be able to stand up against the sometimes challenging questions and beliefs of others.

Hense the panel is 50/50 Christians/non-christians. So when a question is fielded people have quite varied responses which they can compare.

    That sounds pretty interesting alright.

I'd prefer not to go out in the open about my atheism though. If I hide behind my username God won't know. But if turn up in his house and start blabbing I'm screwed. :D

(That, or I play soccer on Thursday nights...)

If you're going, llatsni, be sure to give us a report.

Am I going to hell for saying that I would prefer to play soccer on a Thursday night with The Atheist than answer questions with Christians?

(Maybe I'm jaded from the panel I've already attended to null effect this week)

Yes, of course you'll go to hell. God hates soccer you know ;)

Its an event open to all, and there were plenty of 'athiests' at the last one.

Well I'll be busy off at work drinking coffee. But I do hope it goes well. It is a great idea for reaching out and facilitating conversation.

Heh, I have to warn you - some of the challenges are distinctly un-Christian... ;)
In fact it's reminicent of the Crusades some weeks.

    It was "okay"...

We were treated to wine, cheese and other niceties to begin with, everyone was encouraged to write a question on a sheet of paper and drop it into a box.

When the evening started questions were taken at random, read to the panel and they had a rotating order in which to begin answering.

On the most part it was very polite, politically correct, and way too nice! Nothing like the debates here!!! ;)
There was some interesting angles and points, but they all seemed to agree with each other on the basics and were all quite pragmatic about human nature and all that...

Soooo, interesting, but not mind bending. Maybe next time I'll suggest for it to be spiced up with a Scientologist or something!

Was it that the questions asked were softballs, or that the theists weren't of the mettle of some of the hardliners we see here?

Somebody has to give way for agreement surely!
