John Donnelly (SBG) v Tom Haddock (PBS) 80kgs

The first confirmed matchup on the card for Rings “Christmas Brawl” is one that has been building for a long time. These two fighters have been on a collision course for several years, and on December 17th, we’ll finally see them square off.

John Donnelly is known for his devastating hands, coupled with a fighting style that makes Wanderlei Silva look a little timid. Far from being one dimensional, it is Donnelly’s undeniable skills in the clinch and on the ground that allow him to throw down with no fear. Having won his category at the recent Irish Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open, the Dublin fighter is now looking to return to the MMA ring with a bang, wreaking a terrible vengeance for recent victories his opponent has secured over Straight Blast Gym teammates.

Tom Haddock from Point Blank Submissions will be best known to Rings fans from his victory at “Reborn” over the highly rated Adrian Degorski. Showing not just his physical skills, but also the mental toughness to remain composed under fire from the same fists that knocked out Paul “Hands of Stone” Jenkins, Haddock executed his gameplan with clinical precision. A wily veteran, the Galwayman grinds down his opponents standing – never overextending, never overexcited, just calm and collected.

Can Haddock get the takedown and force Donnelly to submit, or will the PBS fighter suffer the same quick knockout and broken dreams that have been visited on so many others?

Now this is a match up.

I'm very excitied about this. I really can't beleive john donnelly cuts it down to 80kg. Christ, i weigh 80kg, they guy could eat me. Unfortunetly he declined my offer to "roll" so I don't know from first hand how good he is on the ground. I did see him at the BJJ Open. He's a blue belt, no gi specialist, who likes to use the tough stuff.

But this Tom guy has won some stuff on the ground too hasn't he. King of the mat etc. He's also quite a cool and collected character (so it would appear, i don't know the chap) under pressure.

But pressure is exactly what John D is going to give him. That guy goes a bit nuts when the bell goes ding-ding.

Unless Johnd does something silly under the effects of red mist, I can't see Tom being able to cope with the power difference.

    Johnd by knockout.

Poor old Tom nobody seems to pick him on these boards when they are predicting the outcome. People were pretty sure Aidan was going to knock Tom out last time as well. The power difference between him and Eoghan Geraghty was quite substantial too, can people see what I am getting at? :)
I think Tom has every chance of winning this match.
Win lose or draw - it will be a show stealer!

For those on here that know Tom, as an fyi. the Tomahawk won his FC Kickboxing debut at the 100% Impact show in Galway on Sunday. Tom dominated his opponent for the distance but he was a hardy opponent without the sense to go down. Tom won by unanimous decision.

I'd be slow to bet against Tom no matter who he was facing TBH.

    Cool, fair play to him.

This should be good indeed. I think the days of underestimating The Haddock are over.
I wonder what other sexy and interesting fighters are on the card?

Ban him for that ridiculous signature.

Also after the Geraghty fight my money would be on the Tomahawk grinding out a decision or a late submission

i've purchased tickets but will probably not be very familiar wth most of the fighters on the card (although i did see John compete at the point show, he's one tough dude) It would be great if when the fights are announced that someone could write a thread similar to this one detailing the fighters. I'm already very excited about this one just from the build up its been given here.

Owen Roddy (SBG) v Neil Seery (Shika) 65kgs

"Rowdy" Owen Roddy has just made his pro debut, notching up a second round submission win at UFR 4. Buoyed by this, he's ready to see if he can live up to his reputation as the best kept secret in Irish MMA. Well known on the submission wrestling circuit, Roddy has also shown technical striking skills in the Amatuer MMA League.

The more experienced Seery won't be phased by his opponent's reputation, having stepped up to fight other SBG standouts Tomas Murnikas and Mick Leonard at Ring of Truth 3 and Rings: Reborn, respectively. Shorter and stockier than his wiry opponent, the Shika fighter will prove difficult to take down, especially since Roddy will have to put himself in harms way as he closes the distance.

Can submission specialist Roddy weather the storm and avoid Seery's knockout power or will the SBG fighter's blossoming career be nipped in the bud?

Find out on December 17th, at the National Stadium.

    K-1 Rules:
Jamie De Vries (Hol) v Gintarus Dumschi (Ire) 75kgs

De Vries, coming from a Muay Thai background, is entering into this K-1 matchup with a record of 6-2-0. An aggressive fighter, expect the crowd to be on their feet as he takes on Bridgestone's Gintarus Dumschi, who will be representing Ireland.

In this, the first official K-1 matchup ever held in Ireland, fans will witness spectacular striking action, with no grappling for those who prefer a stand up battle.

Fighting out of Ireland's premier Muay Thai gym, Dumschi will have the full support of the crowd at Dublin's National Stadium - will this unnerve the Dutchman or can he topple the hometown favourite?

will the SBG fighter's blossoming career be nipped in the bud?

How wonderfully poetic of you Clive.

Also, for the lazy amongst us, what are the rounds in K-1, amount and duration please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

K-1 rules state either 3x3mins or 5x3mins. I'm sure Shidoshi Kavanagh will enlighten us as to which it is!

Junior Cristovam (Swiss) v Aidan Marron (PCC) 70 kgs

Cristovam, the first of the Swiss fighters to compete will be hoping to notch up a win for the visitors as he takes on Progressive Combat's highly rated Aidan Marron.

Marron, best known to Rings fans for his war with Árni Ísaksson at the last event, will be looking to get back to winning ways at the "Christmas Brawl". With a a proven ability to secure the win, whether a first round stoppage, griding out a decision or one of his array of submission techniques, the Northerner will be taking the fight to his opponent from the first bell.

Cristovam, fighting out of Swiss Top Fighters Team will have no fear of a ground battle, as STFT are known for their slick jiu jitsu skills. Largely an unknown, the Swiss fighter will be looking to make a name for himself, and could bring any strategy to the ring.

Can the more experienced Marron impose his will on the newcomer, or will the visitor cause an upset in the first match of Rings: "Christmas Brawl"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

Narigus (SBG) v Liam Shannon (PCC) 90kgs

Both making their debuts in Rings, these two Titans will lock up in the centre of the ring and we'll find out what really happens when an irresistable force meets an immovable object.

Liam Shannon will undoubtedly bring the balanced conditioning, standup, clinch and ground skills, that have become the hallmark of Progressive Combat Club fighters. Wary of Straight Blast Gym's submission reputation, he may opt to try and keep the fight standing, or he could try to put his opponent on the back foot by pushing for a takedown.

Narigus is a force of nature - so much so that he doesn't even need a second name.
One of those rare fighters who can combine incredible strength for grappling with real knockout power, the SBG athlete will come out with all guns blazing. Rounded technical skills combined with raw aggression make Narigus one to watch for the future, but first he must tangle with Shannon, who will also be looking to make a name for himself.

Nobody can predict how this fight will go, but one thing is for certain - it could end in a split second, so don't blink or you could miss it.

Micheal Leonard (SBG) v Danny Vargen (Hol) 65kgs

A huge fan favourite, Mick "Sissy Boy" Leonard will be looking to recapture the title of "King of the Slam" on December 17th. Known for his aggressive takedowns, combined with slick submission skills, the SBG fighter will be seeking to impose his strategy on his mysterious Dutch opponent.

Coming from Holland, it's not unreasonable to guess that Vargen will have strong stand up skills. If he can match Leonard in the clinch, it could be a long night for the SBG fighter. Vargen will undoubtedly be trying for the knockout with every strike, but Leonard, brimming with confidence from his last win at Rings: Reborn, has been there before.

This may be the last chance many people get to see "Sissy Boy" in action, as he is off to seek his fortune in the jungles of South East Asia - so make sure you're in the front row at Dublin's National Stadium to see whether he leaves in a blaze of glory, or with his tail between his legs.

You see Clive, I always thought Mick's tail was the best kept secret in Irish MMA.

Anyway, this card friggin' rocks! Kudos to the matchmakers. If Chcuk Norris makes an appearance at this event it is possible the universe could explode from too much concentrated ma rockiness!

As mod, I'm going to ban anyone here who doesn't buy a ticket for the event, and that includes JK and Sissy Boy!

I think I'm working for it.. Any chance of changing the venue to the canteen of AOL? They have tables and chairs there. It will be just like a hardcore wrestling match.

Adrian Degorski (SBG) v Roodi Troost (Hol) 80kgs

Adrian Degorski gave fans just a taste of his striking skills at Rings: Reborn, and this time he'll be planning on serving up a banquet. The dangerous Polish boxer is looking to propel himself back to the top of the MMA ladder and a win in this International fight would certainly set him on his way.

Stading in his way is Roodi Troost, a Shooto Holland veteran with a pro record of 2-0-0.
This Dutch fighter is no slouch on the feet either, being a Thai Boxing champion in his home country, but also having a win by submission under his belt. Degorski would be quite a scalp for Troost to claim, extending his unbeaten record and making him a force to be reckoned with in the -80kg division.

When these two warriors put it all on the line and throw down, only one man will be left standing.

Árni Ísaksson (SBG) v Glynn Hubbard (UK) 75kgs

The Ice Viking Árni Ísaksson made a big splash in his Rings debut, defeating the highly rated Aidan Marron in what most fans agreed was the fight of the night. Since then he's secured another victory in UFR IV, and is hoping to make it three out of three on December 17th. An experienced Muay Thai fighter in his native Iceland, Ísaksson can stand with the best of them, but is also fast developing a ground game to be feared.

Glynn Hubbard has everything to win as he is making pro debut in MMA. Also coming from a Muay Thai background, Hubbard will be well prepared for a stand up battle, but the critical factor will be how well he has trained in the clinch and ground games. Very much a dark horse, the UK fighter could surprise the crowd by pushing the action on the ground.

Will Ísaksson go for a takedown to take his opponent out of his comfort zone, or will these two Spartans treat the crowd at Dublin's National Stadium to a devastating standup war?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 334 ✭✭TwoKingMick

Those fights are definalty very interesting, although noticalbly less sexy than the previously announced fights. Which is a shame. Its going to be very difficult to call these fights with so many mysterious foreign nationals taking part, but that will make it very exciting.

And john o'b, the first round is on me. Assuming you're staying up of course.

I think the brother was down your way today actually John, explaining tech stuff to the bosses down that way? He says he met his ole Super down there, Liam something? Missing a few fingies after an oil rig accident? He says Hi anyway ;)
