The motherboard and CPU will work, but you'll have to find a different fan. That fan isn't designed to sit over a Socket A chip.

Yes, but komplett dont sell that cpu anymore, and you are investing in old technology it has no upgrade potential whatsoever

An asus A8N-E and a atlon 64 3200 (included hsf) would only cost €270, or get a socket 939 opteron 144

Unless you are working to a very tight budget go for a athlon 64 or opteron system

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I already have the chip. My motherboard is on the brink so has to be replaced.
Thinking of getting a new fan because even though the one i have works fine i was thinking of getting this fan because it is quite. It says the fan works with all speeds of amd Athlon XP bartons. I dont have any thermal paste either.

The processor isn't the problem, its the motherboard. Zahlman's own comparison sheet says that the fan isn't compatible.

The problem is the motherboard hasn't got the necessary mounting holes around the cpu socket for that Zalman heatsink. There are other Socket A motherboards which have these mounting holes and this is a very good heatsink, so I'd consider maybe getting a different motherboard (maybe an Asus A7N8X series or Abit NF7-S series as these have the suitable holes) as the range of decent heatsinks while will clip on to the actual socket nowadays is not great. Also the way in which the Zalman mounts is much much more secure. If the heatsink manages to unclip itself from a Socket A chip, the chip will burn out in milliseconds as Socket A chips have no way of slowing down to prevent burnout in a thermal emergency. (Athlon64 and Pentium4 can slowdown to save themselves)
Actually come to think of it why are you going for Socket A at all? you could have an Athlon64 3000+ Socket 939 ,motherboard and Zalman heatsink for approx. €300, much better investment IMO.

Thanks for the replys lads. Im hopeless at this. I think i will hang on to my old fan. Can thermal paste be picked up for cheap in the likes of pc world?

To tell you the truth I'd say you would have 'em scratching their heads at PCWorld if you asked them for something like thermal paste. A quick root around their website doesn't inspire confidence anyway, maybe I am a bit cynical but as soon as I see things like Packard Bell and Advent popping up before my eyes I slam on the brakes and stick it into reverse while she's still sliding forward :D Since you only need a small little dab of it maybe one of the lads on here would help you out. Would depend on where you live of course but if you are in Dublin or Cork there might be someone fairly near you that would oblige you with a bit of paste. Failing that I have found Kustom PCs in Scotland to be cheap for small items because they will send smaller orders by post rather than courie, though I guess you'd need someone with a credit card to order it for you. That's what I usually do anyway, just get a mate with a CC to order and then pay him the cash.
