Could anybody living in the Dooradoyle/Raheen area be able to tell me the best option for broadband pricewise.

There are a good few companies providing this service now. BT Ireland (Esat), Eircom, UTVLive, Irishbroadband, NTL. Most of these have websites with prices, just do a search on Google.

Just remember that you have to have an active telephone line in your home with most of these services and that is not included in the price. I heard that http://Irishbroadband.ie have a wireless broadband system called Ripwave without the need for a telephone line but your house needs to be in the line of sight of their transponder as far as I know.

You might be better posting this on the broadband forum here on boards, those guys may be able to give you more information on the best package.

I got a telphone line in just to get broadband with
Smart Telecom who have a good deal going with 2mb speed and
no download cap. I got the line in around April and am still waiting
    for broadband (Dooradoyle area)

Unfortunatly you will find that All broad band services that use a land line
will not be able to provide you with broadband just yet.
(Apart from Eircom which are way to expensive)

From speaking to Smart Telecom they tell me that have been at the high courts
with Eircom (for bloody ages) as they are not being very helpful in switching
poeple over once they sign up to another provider.

The Dooradoyle exchange is the biggy. For Reasons unknown to me they
seem to be fighting for control or access to this. It will be after christmas
some time before this will change. I was told a min of 10 weeks before
smart telecom can start connecting customers up.

Irish Broad band do a wireless setup but the speed suffers. I was going
to go for these guys but the deals are just not good enough.

One place if ya wanna hold out for is magnet.ie I think these guys
offer broadband/Digital TV channels/Phoneline all in one package.

just out of curioustity does anyone know if digiweb's metro is availble in raheen and castletroy

digiweb say the Lines are suitable but they dont make a mention
if they can actually connect ya up at present.
(You have to order the service before they actually check!)

They also have a wireless but again your getting a crap download rate
and a high price. (to get the equivilant average 2mb service is 145 Euro per month)

I have Broadband Plus with BT Ireland and had it connected two weeks after signing up but that was about 11 months ago. I also bought a wireless router myself so that I can use the laptop anywhere in the house. The bb itself is good, fast and reliable but their customer service is crap. Waiting in a queue on the phone for an hour and then they may not ring you back. Their billing is all over the place also but the company I work for is paying for it so I am happy to put up with that.

    Get smart telecom
All the other companies have caps which you might think wont effect you but
trust me after you find out that you can get the latest eps of lost etc online
    it will :D
    they are pretty cheap too

You should try http://www.digiweb.ie/broadband_metro_index.asp?i=80&i2=81&i6=90&zzz=hm and look at the metro wireless
it should up and going by the weekend you will get 3mb download
    & 512k upload for 35 euro a month

and u also get a 30gig cap so whats the point of having a 3mb connection?
cap size is more important than high end speed imho

I wonder will the metro be any good for games ?
    Is magnet.ie available in Limerick?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭IrishMike

    metro is wireless
Might be useable for gaming but it is not as good as dsl

The Metro looks OK if 3mb/sec seems very high cos others
are only offering 512kb/sec for the same price ranage.

magnet are only around Dublin-ish areas at the moment I think.

Still prefer a hardline though, I know my parents have those wireless
transmitters so they can watch TV in the Kitchen by beaming the signal
from the living room in.....that is until someone turns on the microwave and
the thing goes mental. Would not want the same thing happening with
    the wireless web.

3MB per second is the high end throttle speed, on average you would probably only get about half that speed as with most of the others.

Ya 30GB is small it just depends on what you want it for, im going
to get the 4mb/1mb package well im wating on it that has a 60GB
cap but screw that digiweb dont charge for going over the download
cap. Magnet will just offer the same DSL as BT/Digiweb & UTV right
now but we can expect more in about 12 months.
