Laptop batteries

My laptop battery seems to pretty much last between 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours before dying.Just wondering if this is the average for all laptops around at the moment or can anyone recommend types that generally have better battery life.
Also, what do people think of having a second battery as back-up and simply putting that in when the first goes? Is this recommended or harmful in any way in the long-term?
    Cheers.

How long is a piece of string? What does your manufacturer state the expected battery life should be? (And take note of their testing conditions)
What's the spec. of the laptop, how old is the laptop, what you're running(!), and the spec of the battey... (Pointless..)
Your laptop may only use certain battery models.
You may be able to get a higher capacity battery - try contacting your laptop manufacturer or google (These are usually quite expensive).

To improve performance: enable power saving on devices, or disable them if you don't use them and kill a lot of startup software. And store the laptop/battery in a cool place. Charge regularly. More info/tips:

A second battery is a good idea.

I get about 10 minutes on mine (P4 3.2 Ghz, year old laptop). :(

Must try the battery in the fridge.

some laptops can take a second battery

there was a type that used to take NiCAD or NiMH and later ones in the range took Lithium, so you could get up to 15 hours on the older laptop !

Have a look at the power suppyly for the latop, the more amps on it the faster the laptop will eat batteries.

If you have tons of ram you could look at some windows tweaks to not page the OS, no pagefile and set very aggressive timeouts on the HDD to keep it out of the way, brightness of screen is a factor too.
