Hey just wondering about peoples general opinion on this, does it make sense, does it give the average Joe any advantage?

I don't disagree with the rule but i think the R&A are going about it the wrong way.
In recent years the ball has added way more yardage than the drivers. Think back to pre prov era. Professional 100's and tour balatas. The modern prov probably has 20 odd yards on thoes balls.
Limit the balls, much easier, ie: ban the construction of balls that go too far. Give it 6 months to filter through amature golf and prov's will sell on the black market for €50 a pop. You heard it here first :D

Bring back the wooden drivers I say!! :D

To be honest with the size and forgivability of modern drivers, a lot of golf courses are playing a whole lot easier. Ok it's a bit more extreme for the pros, but all this technology does affect the way courses play..

They should make more course tigher and benefit the straighter golf than adding yards on to course and taking the short hitters out of the game.

The majority of players will be struggling to reach a par 4 over 400 yards in 2 shots.

tighter fairways and more trouble is better than extra length as people might have to use 3 wood or long iron instead of driver.

    Thats my 2 cent worth

It's easier to regulate the Drivers than to regulate balls.

The fairest thing for the Pro tours is to introduce one specification for all manufacturers. Perhaps if that is done then the same could be tried at amateur level.

It can only come from the R&A!

I think its just as hard.
How can you tell who is using a high cor driver without inspecing it and comparing to a known list?
Do you fancy having to wait through that every saturday morning?

I reckon it will be the same as the Ping "Square" grooves, a big fuss but they will be legal again.
By 2008 there will be some new thing that evens it all out.

I think yes it is a good ruling. Drivers were getting way too out of hand I feel personally. If you play on a high levelyou will see it. Alll current GUI events have the ban implemented already. And on a tournament over the summer you could see the massive difference. It was much more on the longer irons where people were using, not so muc hthe short irons. There was definatly a loss of yardage bigtime. And the guys who were jsut using drivers, and 7 irons down, now had toruble, because they had to use irons they never realy used.

I'm personally still looking for a nice regulated driver for next years province tournaments (ulster, connaucht boys etc) But cant find a good one, I dont like the ping g2, and it turns out a club i bought of ebay which should have been legal, was now added to the list and is illegal =/
