    Hi,

I have just bought a laptop and have got two options for shipping from the states - FedEx and USPS Express.

The USPS is cheaper but I'm worried with the An Post strike it could get held up if using this service.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

USPS use GLS in Ireland, not An Post.

You'll get hammered for VAT and import duty with both of them. FedEx will deliver fast, pay the charges and bill you. GLS will hold it, deny having it, hold it more, pretend not to know you, hold it, ignore the telephone for a week, bill you and then acknowledge you when they have money for them in your hand and are waving it in their faces.

USPS use An Post now in Ireland - or at least they have all this year when I was getting parcels. It will go to Portlaoise first for Customs and they will require cash-on-delivery.

If you use USPS there is a 50/50 chance of not paying any customs duty and VAT on import.

If you use UPS,DHL,FedEX, you are 100% guaranteed to pay duty and VAT.

For me, its an easy choice!

Yup....I've shipped a PSP, a fuji finepix and a sony HDD mp3 player from US ebay sellers....all of which used USPS, and I've not paid VAT on a single one of those items (and they weren't marked as gifts)

USPS are fine and dandy. I hate seeing "ship with FEDEX/UPS/DHL only" on websites! It will get to you soon enough too. If you order at the weekend you should have it before next friday week.

USPS Express (or Global Express Mail) is a tracked 3-5 day service and thus handled by SDS/An Post and you will get charged customs duty and tax over 90% of the time, once the declared value + shipping is over E45 (for gifts, over E22 for non-gifts, IIRC).

Normal USPS Airmail is just handled by the post monkeys, the Express option has to get barcodes scanned etc, and thus is subject to more scrutiny.
