HDD Problems!

    Hey All

In the process of building a PC, first one so I'm a bit green.

Bought a 180 Gb HD its a Hitachi Deskstar, the problem I'm having is that its not initialising. It is recognised by the CMOS as being the 'secondary slave device', when I check in the device manager menu, it shows up on the tree along with the 40gb(currently running the OS).
When I check the properties, It claims the device is functioning correctly.

Wondering if it is possible that the jumpers are incorrectly set on the back of drive?
Have the Master HDD on a seperate IDE cable,
    Am running a P4 1.5ghz Chipset on a jetway i845 (I405) motherboard

I Checked out Hitachi Website and downloaded 3.5inch floppy bootup disc
    But doesn't appear to work.

I bought the drive on Boards, and perhaps someone else has has similar problems, (or maybe I'm just too green behind the ears!)

Any pointers or links of assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    P

    Go into

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

And you should see your disk listed. Right click it, and format it.

Its there, but when you buy a harddisk, it doesn't come preformatted, as there are so many different formats (eg: Linux, Windows, etc). If you're using WindowsXP, format it using NTFS.

Hey Auslander I bought two of those drives off here as well the ones I bought are 185.5Gb Hitachi Deckstar. I've only checked one so far but I'm missing 15.5Gb its only showing up as 170Gb!!! Hope I haven't bought a lemon. I know theres always a difference between advertised and on disc size but 15gigs is a big difference.

Anyway while mine were already formatted sounds like your weren't, thats why it would be listed but not accesable. Right click on the drive in "My Computer" and choose "Format" that should sort you out.

Btw I take it you want it as a secondary HD and not as your primary?

    Hey Syco
Thanks for that information, spent ages trying to figure it out.
It works just fine, I put in two Primary partitions.

Jaquian, have just checked the properties of that new drive, I've lost about 70mb on each partition, so still have about 182gb to play with.
I used the Partition Manager to set it up. Hope that is of some help to you.

Btw just have another question, if I may,

Bought a new tower, problem at the mo is that the motherboard power lead
(20 pin) and the aux power supply for the usb won't reach the PSU's new position
Is it possible to buy extended 20pin leads? Tried in Peats and Maplins to no avail, should I be worried about voltage stability, if I extend the leads?
Has anyone had similar problems, or have links to sites?

    Thanx P

Unfortunately I don't know anything about voltages but I reckon you should be able to get the lead. I'd say Maplins & Peats have it but they're very unhelpful. You'd need to know the exact name for them to help. You could try looking in PC World Blanchardstown if you're in Dublin as you can view all the leads they have on display.

See the 20-24pin power adapter second fromthe bottom. Is this what you're looking for: http://www.marxcomputers.ie/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=cablesint&cart_id=

This is an Irish company, give them a ring and see what sizes they do.

You can definitely get extensions though I don't know about where you live. It would affect voltages but not so much that it would make a difference.

Something like this your looking for. I don't have time right now to check Komplett though I don't think they have them anyway.
