Apparently you need a HD to run the emulator...

"There is a catch – gamers hoping to benefit from the emulator will need a 20GB hard-drive meaning that the core Xbox 360 offering won’t allow you to play your old games. "

    Welcome to six months ago

Well "most" ppl wont care about xbox games in 6 months time so its not gonna make much of a difference. Hopefully though it convinces ppl to buy the premium pack at launch and not be ripped off when they need a HD in the future to play some game ( only premium packs in japan so id say theres a very good chance u'll need a HD to play certain games).

It's impossible to get a deposit put down on a premium package.

I have the premium package nearly paid for already, no problems getting the deposit down.

Ye my brother only pre-ordered one a few weeks ago in an xtra-vision and has it fully paid for but i doubt i'll get it on launch unless not a lot of ppl pre-ordered in the same store. I'll have to ask them and see if I have any chance. Ring some xtravisions in small towns near you if you havent already.

Thats my plan. There's quite a few around so if I have to go to Kilkenny or anywhere around there I'll do it as it fits in with the shift I'm on too.

All the phone numbers and addresses are here:

In dublin, galway etc there probably all booked already but I cant see them being booked out in small towns as most ppl havent a clue when its even out.

I'd say there will be some desperado's on launch day getting them , just so they don't leave the shop empty handed.

Whats the differance between the core and premium? I thought it was only a wireless controller and something else extra? No? oh.

The most important thing is the lack of a Hard disk which means no backwards compatibility. Also some online games will require it and you may have to buy memory card type devices to save games.

if you buy the hard drive with the core system it wil b backwards compatable then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭EasyBoy1974

I'd say so, nothing i've read suggests that backward compatibility requires a HDD purchased with the system in a bundle.

if you read Todd Holmdahl's comments it sounds like you just need the HDD

"Now that we've solved the technical challenge and the emulator is working, we're certifying each original Xbox title by hand to run on Xbox 360," said Holmdahl. "What I'm really proud to tell you and your readers is that it's easy to get the emulation software, and it's free. We'll give gamers a choice—you can get the latest software updates from Xbox Live, burn a CD from xbox.com or sign up on Xbox.com for a CD that can be delivered to your home at a nominal shipping and handling fee. Once you get the CD, put it in your Xbox 360 and you're ready to go."

To access Xbox games on Xbox 360, gamers will need the 20GB Xbox hard drive. "Basically due to differences in the architecture… for backward compatibility, we have to re-create the procedures and functions of Xbox using stored data on the hard drive," said Holmdahl.

i thought you couldnt upgrade the core system?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,360 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

Yes yea can, you can buy the HDD for the Core system, wont be cheap though.

    In terms of prices:
Core System + Harddrive = Premium System

So basically the premium system throws in a free wireless controller(while taking away a wired controller) and headset.

Premium is obviously better but if there's nothing but cores left for sale(and based on my enquiries around town that's likely to be all that's available to those who haven't pre-ordered) then it's a viable choice, your not really losing out on that much.

You can also use the memory card for storing the image files. (but the price of one, you would be better off getting the HDD)

ehh, not really losing out? core + upgrades to make it premium = €540 premium = €410 premium is better value.

Where did you get the 540 from?

    Core: 310
    HardDrive: 100
    Headset: 20
    Wireless: 10 (difference)
    AV cable: 5 (difference)

So that's €445 to get yourself to the premium version.

So that's €540 to have all same extra's as 360, RRP on www.xbox.com of each item metioned above.

If you throw the wired pad and scart cable that came with the core pack in the bin, and you got the dvd remote which as far as i know is a special offer and won't be in the premium pack once their readily available.

makes no sence, :v: at the end of the day. the point is, the premium is far better value for money.
