    Hi all,

I know there's obviously an issue with customs with regard to electronic equipment, cameras, guitars, etc. but what would be the story if I were to have a LowePro backpack sent via UPS from Canada/US?

I have found what is working out quite well, even allowing for the shipping costs, and I was wondering if this kind of gear would come under the same rules as cameras etc.

    Thanks in advance

simple answer is to ring customs and ask them...

you'd still have to pay duty and VAT if it's value is more than about $20

Check out the miniphoto website, they list irish suppliers and i have found that some of the camera shops were extremely competitive on lowepro gear. camera exchange was good and Gunn's were better. managed to save myself ten euro on a backpack here.

I just ordered a few sing-ray grad ND filter from bhphotovideo last thursday the 10th, was over 300$ worth, was shipped the 11th via normal airmail parcel and got it today, no duty or charges, quickest I have yet. My last couple off orders have been via the standard airmail parcel serivce and not once have I been stung customs, an post clearly too busy to check each parcel properly or probably don't want the hassle off paper work.

    Hi all
    Thanks for the replies.

What I'm going to say now will be rather depressing for El Capitaine, in particular. Sorry! I decided yesterday to head down to the guys in Miniphoto and brought along my gear for a fitting session, so that I'd know which backpack was best for my needs. I was given excellent customer service and then I nearly fell off the seat when I was offered trade price on the backpack I was possibly going to spend $75 on, for shipping alone, plus whatever vat and import duty due.

So in total, I've saved myself a potential €100 AND I don't have to worry about when it will arrive by UPS and what I have to pay them for VAT. I'd have been rather sick to find out later that I could have avoided all that cost and hassle.

For anyone considering Lowepro gear, give them a shout. They're extremely helpful and could save you a decent sum, compared to inflated shop prices.

They're at Laraghcon in Lucan, beside CPI. From the Main Street, go left, over the Liffey, head right, towards the Strawberry Beds. Turn in the entrance on the left hand side, turn immediately left up the hill, then they're on the right, at the end of a line of trees, hidden from view as you drive up. If anyone gets lost from there, there's no helpin' ya. :D
