Theres plenty of kung fu clubs around. I can highly recommend the YMAA school down in Newpark School in Blackrock. I was a member for year. Their training is very good and they also go some training with John Kavanagh. www.ymaa.ie/
I think theres also one in Sion Hill School, also in Blackrock.

I think there might be a wushu place on pearse street somewhere. Just incase u dont know, theres no real difference between kung fu and wushu, its all chinese martial arts. But I seriously recommend checking out the club in Newpark.

I think Edwardo was from Moldovia. I have his mobile number from years ago. email me if you want it.

Also, Wu Shu is not Kung Fu. I would not recomend Carol Stevens place in Newpark at all if your looking for Wu Shu.

Wu Shu is not a traditional Chinese style. In fact it is the Cultural Revolutions attempt to remove the effectivness from Kung Fu while keeping the health benifits. Hence, really good Kung Fu is found in Hong Kong or Tawain.

Wu Shu has no fighting application what so ever. Any one who tells you otherwise is lying. It does make you very flexible, powerful, strong, cardio-fit etc. All good atributes.

People who wanted to fight in CHina after the Cultural revolution did what most people in the west are currently doing: Train as close to Mauy Thai as possilbe. There are differences in the rules of San Shou and hence differences in training. However, the San Shou fighters I fought in China, trained like MT, looked like MT and wore MT shorts.

They used to do Wu Shu on Saturdays in St Stephens Green.

    Peace

Actually Wu Shu is the more appropriate term for Chinese Martial Arts. It can be translated, more or less, into techniques to stop weapons, or something along those lines. Whereas Kung Fu simply means Time and Energy, or something like that, and can be used for anything, like cooking for example.
Neo, Im in no way telling u not to join a Wushu school, but if u r interested in learning Chinese Martial Arts u r better off joining a school like the one down in Newpark. Wushu as a style is exactly wot Fianna said "the Cultural Revolutions attempt to remove the effectivness from Kung Fu while keeping the health benifits". There r good Kung Fu schools outside of China and Taiwan. Dr Yang, www.ymaapub.com www.ymaaschool.com, is from Taiwan and is trying to bring the training, that survived the cultural revolution, to the West.

But of cors, the choice is urs. :) Good luck in ur search.

Personally I think Dr Yang has quite poor kung Fu. In my opinion the best Kung Fu in Ireland is under Sam Lee. However, I also feel his classes have gone way down hill. If you wanted to learn real kung fu I would get some friends to take private classes with Sam Lee and ask specifically for the training he did in Hong Kong, not what he usually teaches these days.

    Peace

whats that sort of Hong Kong Training you refer to?

Can You give us more details, of what that would be like, as opossed to what would be taught in kung fu in ireand?

I was always curious about real kung fu training as opposed to the more flowery stuff you see.

    Thanks

Ye Sam Lee is good. I did consider joining his school, but then I found MMA Ireland :).
May I ask y u think Dr Yang has "quite poor kung Fu"? Alot of people Ive talked to, whether in Hung Ga, Wushu, Tibetan White Crane, Taiji Quan, even Filipino Martial Arts, hold Dr Yang in high regard.

    Hi

I've been doing Wushu awhile now and the best that ireland has to offer in terms of Wushu instruction is Coach Liu Zhenjuan. She is a 22-time national gold medalist of china in Wushu and she teaches in UCD. You don't have to be a student to attend either.

She was prof. of a Beijing Wushu University before marrying an irish man and moving to ireland. She was even one of the main people behind devising the Olympic Wushu Routine. She was on the Beijing Wushu Team. She is really really good and if anyone is serious or even interested in Wushu they should definately check her out.

Here is a link to her cv
    http://www.ucd.ie/wushu/html/Teacher%20Liu%20CV.htm

I think She trains on a sunday or saturday in the UCD area you should e-mail
    robertmbannon@eircom.net
    if you are interested.
