I'm using thunderbird with an Imap server but it's 99% full, when I delete stuff in thunderbird how do I get thunderbird to delete it off the imap server aswell?

It depends on how you've set it up. If you've set "Mark it as deleted" in your account Server Settings, then you'll need to right-click the folder you want to "purge" (remove messages that have been marked, permanently), and choose "Compact this folder".

If you've selected "Move to the Trash folder", then you should be able to delete your messages from there.
