What's the story with getting a college grants? I'm not very familiar with them at all. Do you have to pay anything back? How much can you get from them? Do you need to fit certain criteria?

You need to get a form off your local VEC.

No you don't have to pay anything back, it depends entirely on your circumstances, yes you do, it's completely means tested (your parents have to earn under a certain amount of money, and for top-up grants you need to be going to college a certain number of miles from home, etc.)

Does the money have to be spent on education or could I buy, say... a car?

You can use it on whatever the hell ya want. But u don't get it in a lump sum. If its from VEC then its monthly instalments, from CC I think it's split up into 3 or 4.

most banks will give you an advance on it tho once you have conformation. When I got it, they took there sweet time getting it out (may have been the college messing about too as it goes to them first), so I'd go to the bank there grant advance thingy.
