    Hey,

Im looking to get a new bass for christmass and Ive decided the the basic model just not which version, I want at least a 5 string but maybe a 6 string. Ive never played a 5 or 6 string and I was wondering what the difference in feel is, I mean the stretch across the fretboard on a 6 string must be huge?

Also Im looking at a fretless 5, what would you get?

    Cheers.

Haven't spent much time with 6-strings, so couldn't tell ya there....my 5-string doesn't feel very much different from most of the 4 strings I've played though. I usually pick, so it's nice having the strings a little closer together.
5-string fretless sounds a little scary to me.....when I need that kind of sound, I just throw on some chorus and slide around a lot. :D

Def the 6 string, anything that lets you play more notes per given position that doesnt compromise your playing gets a thumbs up in my books! Ive been playing my bro's 6 string Warwick a bit and it does take a bit of getting used to. The neck is wider, but not as wide some might think it is as the string spacing is narrower than a 4 or 5 string.

Thanks for the replies, Im heading into town tommorow and was wondering if anyone knows anywhere in there that has a 6 string? I think Ill have a bit of a mess around on one and see what theyre like first hand.

    Keep the opinions coming guys.

    Thanks

I'd say you should see if you can play a 6 string before you go and buy one. That's probably the best advice I can give you, but unfortunately, I've no clue where you can try one out. I've already got a 5 string, so if I was getting another one, it would probably be a 6 string.

6 string bass is not like anything else you'll have played before. If you want to stay sharp on it you've got to play it regularily. The string spacing is a lot narrower than your regular Fender spacing you'll find on a P or J bass. This also takes a lot of getting used to.

If you play a lot of upper register stuff, chords and high melody stuff then it's possibly worth the gamble, but if you just keep the groove going then get a 5. The 6 is a much harder instrument to play and keep your chops intact on. Only get it if you'll actually use the high C string, otherwise it's just taking up space in your hand.
