    Try this for size.

    You have eight 8's.
    Using + only - make up 1000, using each of the 8's only once!

    simple...
    using the - slice up two of the 8s in half.... so it gives you oooo
    Now, flip the - 90degrees to get 1.... and add three of the ooo from the halved 8s = 1000
