Hi - I am thinking of going with Blueface for a VoIP solution. As I also want to get a wireless router so I have been looking at the LINKSYS WRT54GP2 Wireless-G Router which has 2 phone ports.

My question is as folllows - What are the similar types of routers by other router manufacturers? and are there any recommended online retailers?

    Cheers
    S

Hi there GetOffMyPatch. Would be interested in hearing an answer to that question too. I have a Netgear wireless/router/modem but it doesn't have QoS.

It feels like a bit of a waste for me having to fork out for a LINKSYS WRT54GP2 but I don't see any other option. I had a look on EBay for WRT54GP2 units but they all seem to be locked to Voneage and there doesn't appear to be a way to unlock them. I read accounts from people who bought unlocked units only to find out later that they were locked.

    The dope

Another manafacture which does some nice, voip / wireless network routers /ADSL modems all combined into the one unit is AVM.

The only place in Ireland selling AVM is Marx computers (Fairview, Dublin3), who also sell a wide range of other VoIP stuff.

Thanks but they are almost €100 more expensive

Surely Netgear or D-link make a similar product

There is the option of a separate ATA and router. The Linksys WRT54G does QOS and you can plug any ATA unit into it. I had the problem where I had a Sipura ATA and Netgear router that didn't do QoS and was thinking of replacing them both with the WRT54GP2 but someone on this forum pointed out that was a waste as the ATA with a router that does QoS gave the same result.

Thanks - I may just go with the WRT54GP2 as I want to a) go wireless for my house b) have wired capability in my home office and get Blueface up and running. I just find it strange that there are no market alternatives as oppose to the Linksys....

Hmmm Interesting never saw that section on OCuk before,
they appear to have dropped Draytek as a VoIP router which is a shame as its a good piece of kit (although expensive)

Think this is the right thread to ask this but does anyone know of a wireless router that is suitable for a cable broadband connection and has ATA functionlity for Voip use. Or a wireless router with ATA functionality and that I can hook up to the existing cable modem?

Do you mean real QoS or the bandwidth reservation type of QoS which many home ATA-routers have?

Real QoS (packet priority) does not work too well unless all devices in the path support & honour QoS bits. Definitely not going to work over the internet, needs to be supported by every router on the way to the destination.

Bandwidth reservation type of QoS, where the router-ATA ensures there is always enough BW for a call is useful.

Linksys wrt54gl with ddwrt firmware + Linksys PAP2-NA voip adapter unlocked, plenty on ebay and they can accept Linksys latest firmware. have this combo on Blueface with STUN server option applied.

thanks for that but is it not getting a bit ridicolous if I need the cable modem thenthe wireless router then the Linksys PAP2-NA voip adapter, the living room wil start looking more like a telephone exchange. Does anyone know if there is a combined device like a gateway with an ata function. I see you can get one for ADSL bt I cant find any of these for catv broadband????

I think I may have found what Im looking for in the WRTP54G , It acts as a wireless router with two ATA phone ports, I can hook up to the cable modem and so Two boxes isnt too bad and I can hide the ugly motorola surfboard modem away somewhere.

I am thinking of getting Blueface, I have a traditional cordless analog phone. Wireless broadband (from Kerry Broadband) and a WRT54G (with ddwrt firmware ) which I use as a wireless router so I can use the laptop around the house.

To setup VoIP using the traditional cordless phone and retaining my wireless around the houseis the setup as simple as this

    1. I connect the PAP2-NA to the internet.
    2. Connect my analog cordless phone to the PAP2-NA
    3. Connect the WRT54G to the PAP2-NA.

    (see diagram attached)

    Edit
    Actually the above is incorrect
    It should be

    1. I connect the WRT54G to the internet.
    2. Connect the WRT54G to the PAP2-NA.
    3. Connect my analog cordless phone to the PAP2-NA

Also if the house has never been connected to Eircom can the PAP2-NA be pugged into a phone socket and the analog phone into another phone socket in the house.

Don't know if these are readily available both Irish Broadband are doing VoIP now and they supply Netgear wireless ATA's. Maybe their website will have specs but I'm not sure.

The AVM FRitz!Boxes have a setting that enable you to connect up to an existing broadband connection e.g on a LAN, Cable modem etc. I have tried this feature and it works.

This link to the AVM site gives a list of resellers (4) in Ireland http://www.avm.de/en/partners/resellers/IRL/index.php

Fritzbox products also available in Marx Computers in Dublin 3

MickeyJoe - how do you find the Fritzbox?

I think the Fritz!Boxes are great but then I am slightly biased as I am one of the resellers in the link that I posted but note that I avoided just mentioning myself !.

I currently have a 7140 set up with SIP accounts from Blueface, VoipCheap, VoipBuster and VoipFone (UK) X 2 - so I can check the quality of service as time goes on and it works great.

Have tried a lot of the features like call forwarding, ringing in with my mobile to the AVM then use VoIP to call out etc and they seem to work as it says on the box ( or the PDF as the case may be)! For those who have not tried it - in the 'Telephone Book' - you can set up a Quick Dial to call someone using their SIP account directly - e.g joebloggs@sip.voipcheap.com so total VoIP to VoIP call (you might have to have a SIP account with the same provider).

Latest Firmware for the 7140 is the nicest that I have seen so far on these. Now for each SIP account (Internet Number as it is referred to on the Fritz!Box) you have settings called 'Adapt telephone number format'. If you have set up your 'location data' in the Advanced settings' correctly then when you dial a number it is automatically expanded to the full international code (I know other makes do this as well). This is great for the likes of VoipCheap. Now you just dial the numbers as you did on your phone before - no having to go 00353...... Also calling in on a VoIP number to go out on another VoIP number works fine - I could not get an earlier Fritz!Box Fon to do this correctly

Just got a 7170 to look at. Grand piece of kit but i reckon you only really want this if you want the three phone ports or want to use the ISDN S0 port. Still prefer the newest firmware on the 7140 thought the 7170 is not far behind.

Also just got the newest 5124 but have not had a chance to look at it yet.

    Thanks for the feedback MickeyJoe.

My BB is vis DSL so I like the fact that you can dial over PSTN or VOIP using the same phone with the Fritzbox. Also one box does everything - BB Modem, Wireless Router, and ATA.

If you're looking to sell the 7170 after you've finished testing let me know. I'd be interested in it. :-)

I also was thinking of getting a WRT54GP2 Wireless-G Router. I have cable broadband and an ATA box and it all worked fine - But my current lynksys router is dying so i thought I as I was replacing it I would just get an all in one box and ditch my ATA box (also I want to ditch my current provider and go bluface).

So, is there anywhere I can by a solution that will allow me to wireless access in the house and let me plug in my cordless phone for Voip using Blueface
By the way I have a wirelaess cable broadband coming into the house not ADSL! So I don't think the Fritz box will work for me?

The AVM Fritz!Box is available from a number of suppliers in Ireland

I'm one of these but won't mention which in case it would be seen as inappropriate to be promoting myself.

The Fritz!Box has a built in DSL modem but you can set it up easily to get it's broadband connection from another source (e.g cable, wireless or even another DSL router if you want to do it for some reason) but it might seem a bit expensive if you're not using it's full capabilities (i.e the integrated DSL modem). Also has the WLAN with default WPA encryption (7140, 7170, 7270)

I'm using cordless phones connected to a 7140 with no problems. The new 7270 will also act as a base station to Dect (Gap) phones so you can register your Dect phones wirelessly to it - no need to buy a base station if you don't have one - just buy up to 6 slaves instead - no wired connection either!.

To be honest I think it is a little more than I want to spend - Now if I didn't already have a DECT base station and 5 phones, maybe?
Like I say I already have an ATA, so unless I can get something cheaper I guess I will just by a wireless router and attach it! I assume if I go this route the linksys is as good as any? Do you sell them?

    Hi John W,

I only do the Fritz!Boxes but I don't think you'll have a problem finding a supplier for the Linksys.
