Terrible news regarding Arrested Development

I hate Fox. This is terrible news:

    Variety reports:

"It's not looking good for "Arrested Development""Arrested Development" or frosh laffer "Kitchen Confidential."

Fox has cut back its episode order on the critically-admired "Arrested" to just 13 segs, down from 22. Producers of "Kitchen," meanwhile, have been told the show won't be getting a full-season pickup.

More worrisome: Fox is pulling both shows from the schedule, effective immediately. "Arrested" returned from a month-long hiatus this week, while "Kitchen" was slated to return Monday.

Instead of the two laffers, Fox will air repeats of drama "Prison Break" in the 8-9 p.m. Monday slot for the rest of the November sweeps. It's presumed "Arrested" and "Kitchen" will return to finish out the remainder of their runs in December. Come January, net has long planned to move "House" into the Monday slot.

Fox wasn't commenting Thursday morning, and for now, nobody's using the word "cancellation." But in the case of "Arrested," the handwriting appears to be on the wall."

They always do this. Family Guy was cancelled twice. Futurama and how many others.
DVD sales brought back Family Guy but will it do the same for Arrested Development?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 390 ✭✭Brock

   no it wont do the same for arrested dev as its actually been a consistent funny show and it does not have a whole heap of bandwagon fans unlike other shows mentioned here, which is a shame as its far far funnier than anything fox are showing now. although last ep of family guy was funny since its return its been good at best nothing new or fresh about it and i would gladly take another 9 eps of arrested before a whole 5 seasons of family guy if its current form is the same.

Fox as a tv channel should be ashamed imo although ratings are poplular show quality should be its main ideal.

i know a large number of arrested fans are out there but we dont count to a large corporate company like **** fox. i would bomb em except i would land in jail with not arrested dev to watch. hopefully another channel picks it up but its a long shot :(:(:(

Arrested Development is too intelligent for the majority of Americans.

Although FOX are a joke when it comes to cancelled shows (see Family Guy's list of cancelled FOX shows),Arrested Development has had terrible ratings and shouldnt have made it past season 1 based on those ratings. They did stick with it,they probably had to though because of the Emmy wins.

The difference between AD and Family Guy is that FG was moved all over the place and taken off the air for long periods. FOX have tried to give AD good slots, even putting it after the Simpsons last season. Didn't work, mainly because as I said,a lot of Americans are stupid and would rather watch comedy where they don't have to figure out why a joke is funny (Everybody Loves Raymond,Two and a half men etc).

    Pity

:( Can't say I'm remotely suprised and, for once, I can't blame FOX. They did their best to get people to watch it but, in the end, it failed. I think most audiences want more disposable comedy rather than one whose plots span episodes and reward 2nd time observant viewing. It's comedy that's less passive because you have to think more than most comedies...

So I'll just say, in my best Gob voice, "You want to cancel Arrested Development? COME ON!"

I agree 100% with you. Fox did heavily promote AD this season but the ratings were just simply not good enough. Thats business. It's the best comedy on Television in my view but sadly US tv is governed by ratings which advertisers look at to figure out where to spend their money.

The end is nigh. It was great while it lasted. I hope they go out on a bang.

That's awful news. And just when I was really starting to hope that the 'twins' deal that was announced earlier in the year would come true. :(

Fair enough, I can understand if Fox cancel it due to low ratings after this season, but at least give us a full final season please! That's the least I'm asking for, this brilliant show deserves to go out on a high in its own way.

All we can do now is hope that another network picks it up. Some hope. Dross like Joey and Generic Sitcom #45629 will always do better than smart comedies that make you think, just because all those shows require you to do is to sit down and drool. This really pisses me off.

It's terrible... and I gather that the lost 9 episodes won't even appear on a DVD at some stage in the future.

Its not that i would like a show because others do it is because a whole big whoop was made about the return of family guy was made because of dvd sales. This was because of fans of the show who caught up later and only seen the show after buying the dvd and thus jumping on the bandwagon.

Since family guys hailed return the show has been ok at best and thats the only reason i mention that i would rather arrested development be saved or bought by another network instead of fox getting good dvd sales and making another big show return if the end product is lacking just like new season of family guy.

heres hoping for HBO or NBC to pick it up.throw it beside my name is earl and surley u got a hit.Although if the show is picked up by another network they will prob show re runs so we will have to wait ages for it to be a new episode.

    From E! Online:
This morning, I emailed Jason to ask if the cancellation rumors are true, and he wrote back to say:

"We're not getting a full season. It will be 13 only ... Everyone is pretty upbeat about it, actually. The last thing we wanted to happen was to overstay our welcome and tarnish the experience and prestige of the show.
It was a great run and it's great that the network didn't cancel us outright, and they're letting us do 5 more where we can wrap up a lot of story arcs."

Jason also told me via batphone that though nothing is official, the "writing is pretty much on the wall," and it would "be a complete shock if it was picked up for another year." But, also, "it was a shock that we got any more episodes than the pilot. It's been great for all of us, and we're really fortunate for the two and a half years we've had."

The web page of 'Kristin' can be found here.

    It's over. :(

Well no, because they're not being produced.

Have to agree with the posts supporting FOX on their efforts to get the show out there and noticed. They tried, and it just didn't work. Blame the US viewers, not FOX - it's just not good business for them to keep putting money into AD.

As Jason Bateman said: "it was a shock that we got any more episodes than the pilot. It's been great for all of us, and we're really fortunate for the two and a half years we've had."

As a viewer, I wholeheartedly agree.

"Dun dun dun dun tish, another one bites the dust..." :(

Although I found this on http://www.saveourbluths.com/
    Dear Arrested Development Fans:

Thank you for your e-mail and your passionate support of Arrested Development. While the show has finished production for its second season, contrary to the rumors you may have heard or read on the internet, it is NOT cancelled.

We at FOX love Arrested Development and we look forward to having the Bluth family back on FOX in the future hopefully for many years. You can help make the show a bigger success by getting as many people as possible to start watching the show this Sunday and every Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

    Sincerely,
    Fox Broadcasting Company

That was back in February though... :(

Wow, you're awfully conceited for someone who comes from a country who's only claim to fame is a show made for Channel 4.

    THE IRISH ARE DEH SMRT!!!

Anyway, never really watched more than 30mins of this show, was on at weird times and it never grabbed me when I did see it.

I actually did see one funny bit when the brother lost his hand to the seal and was making all jokes about it so the main guy makes a joke and the brother FREAKS OUT.

    Slight glimmer of hope:

..Come May, when Entertainment President Peter Ligouri assembles his executives and puts the pieces together for next season's schedule, he just may look down the bench at "Arrested Development" and decide to keep it as a gem that can be shifted to a better night.
    ...
However, there is an intriguing rumor of a suitor: Showtime.
This idea actually makes sense. Showtime has been making great strides in its programming department, but the audience is still lacking. A name series that might prompt die-hard fans (are there any other kind left for "AD"?) to subscribe would be an enticing option. The idea is that "AD" might pair well with "Weeds." And no matter how you get it -- by developing it yourself or snatching it fully built off the discard pile -- a great series is a great series, period.

I read that earlier. It's only a glimmer of hope. it's only a rumour. But it's something that gives me hope. Who knows what might happen if Showtime seriously consider taking it on board. :)
