    Excellent news!
I read comments from the original article, people saying they should get sued... never thought anyone would go through with it though. :D

Just reported on Slashdot. There is already a trojan out that uses the Sony rootkit to protect itself.

AFAIK technically speaking it's not strictly a CD since it doesn't meet the red book standard, and they can't use the Compact Disk logo on them.

From the original exposé it sounded like some really badly written software. If they can't even write good quality malware then they don't get any sympathy from me.

Ecellent news! About time someone stuffed them back - I will never ever but another SOme compaNY product after they stopped my beloved DVDDecryptor :(

Hope they win and I'm right behind them - go's hunting for a SOme compaNY drm so I can sue them in Ireland.....

Wanders of dreaming of luxurious millions :D

In light of the actions of ome of their member companies - SONYBMG we should be writing to the newspapers to ensure the press question them about the use of DRM that potentally crashes your computer, may not play in your cd player, compromises the security of your computer, and in order to undo some of it compromises your privacy.

If you were a journalist what questions would you be asking IRMA?

Sony have stopped production of CD's featuring the aforementioned scumware, while they "re-examine their content-protection initiative". Asshats.

Effects of this rootkit so far:

Compromises system security by installing a hidden application that subverts the operating system functions, and enabling trojan viruses to piggyback on the system security breach.
Compromises a users privacy if they want to unhide it. They do not provide an uninstall program and update the DRM software further using an ActiveX control.
Compromises operating system stabilty and uses computer resources (CPU time).
And ironically......The spyware that Sony installs on the computers of music fans does not even seem to be correct in terms of copyright law.
It turns out that the rootkit contains pieces of code that are identical to LAME, an open source mp3-encoder, and thereby breach the license.

This just gets better and better. Now, the activex you have to install to APPLY for the uninstall (not the uninstaller itself) is believed to be full of security holes:

In fact if you have been to the sony website and installed the activex component, the following link will reboot your computer:

On Friday, the world's second-biggest record label pledged to temporarily stop making CDs that leave computers vulnerable to security breaches. This is a step in the right direction, but it does not go nearly far enough toward correcting a serious ethical lapse. In fact, it is proof positive that Sony is unworthy of our trust or our business.

Actually, unless you can prove that you bought the CD from the US, you can't.

    Be nice though...

Now a FEDERAL lawsuit has been filed in the U.S.! Oh how glorious it is to see them crash and burn!:D :D

AFAIK technically speaking it's not strictly a CD since it doesn't meet the red book standard, and they can't use the Compact Disk logo on them.

So would that mean that songs released on these discs would be inelligible for chart ranking?

Maybe they should ask about Sony/First 4 Internet's breach of copyright ?

LAME code has been found in the product, which they can only use if they release the source code and add the license agreement. It's not like it they had to pay for it or anything.

    BTW:
http://secunia.com/product/6033/ - First4Internet XCP Content Management with all vendor patches installed and all vendor workarounds applied, is currently affected by 2 Secunia advisories rated Highly critical

I expect they know all about the importance of reliable, secure code at system level now.

    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/02/14/sony_bravia_bug/
Sony has admitted a faulty batch of Bravia-branded LCD and rear-projection TVs has made it into wild. Around 400,000 sets may carry a software bug that could prevent them from being turned off after a cumulative 1,200 hours in stand-by mode. The TVs won't switch out of stand-by mode at that point, either.
