Wow, those look rather nice. I wonder how they'd compare to my Tokai PRS Copy?

    Well spotted, v nice.
Theyre a tokai style maple veneer (ie paper thin sheet of flamed maple glued onto thicker maple top), but still, great additions to the SE range. Plus theyve some nice maple soapbar models too.

I'd hit either. If they hadn't stopped producing leftys, the bastards.

Pfft! Buying guitars here! :p I'd consider buying it abroad.

Maple tops aren't always meant to be book-matched. Some people prefer to have two different pieces of maple or whatever on the top. It's called flitch-matching.

Bleah. I call it 'we had these 2 pieces of wood left over, so to make our shipping quota, we....'

Well that's quite a cynical view. I don't like the guitar much myself but I stand by the possibility that it is deliberately flitch-matched.

Edit: The mere fact that they use a flitch-matched top for the picture, the only one currently available to us before the release, could be proof enough that it was deliberate.

That could be true, I suppose...but if it is, for me it's right up there with Thomann trying to sell amplifiers whilst forgetting to mention how much wattage they push.....

I wouldnt get too bogged down about the quality of the flame, or the bookmatching/mismatching. Its only likely to be a 6 or 700 euro guitar (in the right place of course, probably a grand in the shops here..).

I wouldnt buy one of these guitars, its not really my cup of tea anymore, but i did have a santana se up till recently, and theyre very very decently made guitars.

Anyway, its always nice to have good quality, nice looking guitars released, especially for younger players, doubly so in light of some of the junk thats out there.

    Don't like the flat top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

Now that you point it out, the flat top doesn't look good and I think that non-book-matching doesnt look great either. IMHO why not just paint the guitar youre not going to make an effort to match up the wood?
FWIW, having said all that, PRS guitars in general are kind of growing on me. It must be the constant exposure. :v: ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭Rustar

After zooming around the net looking for the definition of flitch-matching, the overwhelming evidence seems to indicate that it is simply 2 pieces of wood from the same log, or 2 pieces from the same log used for veneer purposes.
    I.E., not matched.

<see previous comment about making shipping quota> :v:

are you sayin that that top is not contoured, like its completely flat? strat style or with an lp bevel?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

It looks like it's LP Junior flat.

Its as flat as a pancake unfortunately.

A carved top at this price point would require sacrifices in hardware quality, build quality, pickups etc. Whether you think that compromise is worth it is a personal matter. A lot of people do, judging by some of the junk you see in Waltons etc. Ive seen those crappy 'sx' guitars, with carved, quilted tops, and bird inlays for god sake. Suffice to say, youd be better off with a washing up bottle and some elastic bands.

The point of the SE guitars was to provide a good quality guitar at beginner prices. If you want carved tops and nice looking flame tops at this price, theyre out there, but on lower quality guitars. Its a simple choice.

In fairness, im mainly referring to the likes of Epiphone. Tokai are in another ball game altogether, but a Jap tokai would cost more than a PRS SE i think? (in the same shop). So its not really a comparison anyway.

I wouldn't say that. My Tokai PRS copy is a Korean made guitar, and cost me under €400, including shipping. I'd say it's a fair comparison.

Ah well, whatever, im getting sidetracked. I dont own shares in Tokai OR PRS, so I dont really care, and i havent played your PRS copy, so I cant comment.

My main point was just that its nice to have another good quality mid-priced guitar on the market, and I dont think any guitarist with a bit of cop on could disagree with that, whether theyd buy the guitar or not. And complaining about the bookmatching and flat top on a 700euro guitar is daft. Thats all.

You see, I can't really agree as far as complaining about the flat top and bookmatching, because mine has an arched top, is nicely bookmatched, and it's nearly half the price.

Anyway, this is just going off my original point, which was in reference to this:
If you want carved tops and nice looking flame tops at this price, theyre out there, but on lower quality guitars. Its a simple choice.

My point being, that if that's what you're after, there's Tokai and I don't think it's lower quality.

Nor is my Schecter, beautifully bookmatched, archtop, Duncan design PUs, more inlay than you've ever seen, $599 USD; which is probably about the same range we're referring to.

    Plays like a freekin' dream. :v: .......

Ok, this PRS custom is crap value, fine, forget i brought it to your attention. If I ever become poor like the rest of yez, and only have 700 euro to buy a guitar, ill stay clear of it. Thanks lads.

Mods - lock her up;) :D  :v:

No need to lock it. It's still an on going discussion.

Hey Voo, we're not pickin' on you.....just that guitar. ;)
Truth is, if it was in the store and I picked it up and played it and it made me sound like Eric Johnson, I'd buy it!
