Is there a need for a "What Camera" forum? or a sub-forum even?

    Any thoughts?

    wouldnt be a bad subforum...

it's practically all thats posted in photography anymore these days so maybe an all-encompasing mother-of-all stickies would do the job? It'd probably be far kinder on the ol' mental health to direct people toward a thread covering the subject than to have to type the same advice over and over and over.

I dont mind people trying to find out what camera to buy and i do help some people but it does get a bit repetitive.

    Can we implement this please?

it'll really clear up the photo forum if we do, and it'll be more organised.. :)

What may also clear up the forum would be, perhaps, if each person has only one thread for plugging/seeking advice on their pictures, which they can just update when there's need for it to be updated? Or would that be too difficult with the lack of search, if it goes off the front page? Just an idea...

I have tried that before Purple, and it doesn't work.

I tried that for about 3-4 different "installments" of photo bunches, and the thread got about 40 - 50 vews.

Then I posted a seperate thread and it got twice that in views easily. For example my last thread got 161 views.

Perhaps that would be more suited to a subforum. Post and comment only.

If the "What Camera" is stickied after the usual sort of advice is given it could be an idea if people post what cameras they own/have owned and any pros/cons about it. Like their basic SLR versus their digital and so on.

I'd be wary of having too many subfora that might wither. It's not as if the photography forum has a great amount of traffic - last 10 days had 38 active threads, last 45 had 108, year had 726 - that's only about 3 new threads per day.

It's impossible to stop people posting 'help me buy a camera' posts but a good sticky with links to some good posts might cut down on it. Also, re-enabling the search would help but that's not really the call of anyone here.

As for criticism requests, I think the more the better but what annoys me a little is thread titles like 'new photos' or 'look at this'. Something a bit more descriptive, please. As a suggestion, how about if posters could do something on the lines of '[critique] Kite surfers at Portmarnock', 'Barcelona architecture' or 'Great tits in my garden'. (not requesting those topics particularly, just extra information to help recognise new threads).

Sounds decent... Can we give this a try?
