You would need a dish I presume which means that you are liable to pay the TV license fee.
Apart from that I can't see how it would receive the digital signal.

That's probably for terrestrial digital TV, which I believe RTE are introducing sometime in 2002 :D err.

Anyway, if you want something like a Skystar card to receive satellite signals you'll need the dish, and hence a TV licence. There are quite a few free channels on various channels that you can view with a Skystar card, check out the Satellite forum for some info.

There's no real way of avoiding the TV licence though. If you have anything with a TV tuner in it, or even an aerial/satellite dish, then you must pay the licence. Even if the TV or decoder can't decode RTE (such as UK ones) you still need to pay the licence!

The only way around it would be to scrap the TV and replace it with a monitor or LCD/Plasma TV which often don't have the tuner built in. Then get rid of the VCR and only keep your DVD player (which probably doesn't have a tuner). Then either watch everything on DVD or download your TV shows. Using this method, you could legally avoid the TV licence. It's a lot of hassle though.

You are missing one minor point - who broadcasts digital in Ireland?

Sky, that's who. And what do you need to receive Sky? A satellite dish.

Freeview is a terestrial system in the UK (i.e. this gadget will work in the UK, no need for a dish).

em, you can get the north's freeview digital if your close enough to the border like meself - telly has iDTV Tuner and a normal analgue one. Me gets BBC 1, 2, 3 4, ITV, Ch4 and CHannel 5 with a bunch of others in crisp smooth widescreen digital goodness.

Of course all this info is useless to anyone not living in a border county.
