Does anyone have experience of dealing with recruitment consultants?

I am a recent graduate (in Finance) and am looking for work. I recently got in touch with a recruitment consultant in Dublin because they had a few graduate jobs that i would like. I am working in Dublin at the moment and trying to move jobs.

However, I worry that they are advertising jobs that they don't have i.e. they are just trying to get CVs and then try to put you forward for crappy jobs. I am just wondering will I be put forward for jobs that I don't like, rather than the ones I specifically want.

I am due to meet them Monday evening so i'll let you know how i get on.

    I'd recommend them

    Good Luck.

That about sums up my experiences of them aswell. That said they are a means to an end so you have to learn how to deal with them. I good check is to ask for specific details of the job. If they can't give you that, or its sounds very "typical" then its likely not a real job. A real jobs tend to have something different or quirky about them.

What do you care? If they put you forward for a crappy job  tell them to piss off.

Finance graduates complaining about people wanting money.

    What do you care?

I suspect he cares because he doesnt want to waste his time looking at a promising job and then find out its bs.

If he has just graduated he has plenty of time, including time to waste. Why doesn't he work out a hundred companies he wants to work for and ring them?

Why does he think he is entitled to a 'non crappy' job?

    Finance graduates
    emphasis on the word graduate!
Never much work for graduates if you ask me, Anyways most graduate opportunites are advertised directly by employers. Recruitment agencies tend to deal with experience people more or they only offer graduates really jnr support type jobs.

hit every financial institutions website in dublin for a start

IMO people blame recruitment companies cos their too lazy to do the work themselves

Your best bet as a graduate is go directly to the companies. GradIreland have a good few financial jobs available for graduates here

    gradireland is good.
just go to the red book or the golden pages. and get a list of every financial company in dublin.

or the financial regulator. Im sure there are public lists of all regulated fiancial institutions. the point is there are a million lists out there. focus on getting your cv into a manager in your particular area as opposed to bottom of the pile in hr. once you have done that. get a notepad and call everyplace 1 day after submitting your cv to make sure they got it .During that phone call find out whats happening . have they recently hired graduates? are they planning to? what areas? whats the best person to talk with about these vacancies? when should you call back? etc .......

basically a recruitment company wont bother doing this because companies rarely hire graduates from agencies. also even if they did the fee is percentage based so why would a recruiter work their ass off with all of the above when they market is crying out for experienced professionals who command salarys *5 times of a graduate wage.

    Thanks for your replies.

I am working at the moment in a job that I don't really like, so I was just searching through various sites (gradireland.com & irishjobs.ie) to see what vacancies were available at the moment. I've already applied for a job with AIB that i'm waiting to hear back on.

It was when i was on irishjobs.ie that i found two vacancies for graduates that looked very good. Both were with the same recruitment agency so i sent in my CV. I have to meet them on Monday, but I was just really wondering what experiences other people may have had with agencies.

Anyway, I'll let ye know how i get.

I'm in a good enough job as it is, I don't want to be put forward for jobs that would be a step backwards. Maybe "crappy" was a poor word to use!!

The guy i mentioned will get you in there, not a bother, probably within a week. He did for me anyway. I was talking to him today because I had to drop in letters of recomendation, and he said he's looking to fill loads of branch positions atm, and agencies will get you an interview straight away.

I'll give you his details (assuming the mods don't mind) his names Shane Holton, and you can reach him on 5005914. You might aswell see what positions he has on offer.

And just to clarify, I'm not Shane Holton! :)

Thanks for that DubGuy, I'll give him a call later in the week.

Anyway, I meet with the recruitment consultants and i've had a good first impression. They were very professional and organised. They found out what i wanted to do and said they'll send my CV off to some good companies (fingers crossed!!). They will even give a prep interview before any real interviews come up, which would be a big help.

I'll try and post up any future developments and experiences, just in case anyone else is going through a similar experience.

which companies... when can you expect feedback .... are their job specs available........have they been interviewing recently....... are these new vacancies or part of regular recruitement going on............

you've basically just given them a carte blanche to send your CV anywhere they like in Ireland. Now start applying for positions yourself direct and see what happens when your cv has been submitted twice to a company.

Do yourself a favour and get a list from the agency of every company it has sent your CV to. Also ask to be contact b4 CV is sent anywhere.

Finally as mentioned above. I will be surprised if you find any kind of decent graduate opportunity through a recruitment company. So IMO you really need to get the finger out and start targeting companies you would like to work for directly.
