Outlook Issue

    Heya lads,

Little problem here, i run the pc in my local surfing club and do all the emails on it, ie answering questions, organising events etc, recently the club contacted a few distributors to send us there product lists.

Basically we have a really slow dialup connection and these emails were 20mbs insize waiting to be downloaded from the server to our outlook account, this took the bones of 2 hours.

This happened again yesterday and i brought the PC to my gaf to hook it up to the broadband for downloading emails as one had another large attachement.

I need to know is there a way i can view the subject and sender before i say yes to download, at moment if there is one big email i have to download that before i get any of the smaller and possibly more important mails.

    Cheers
    Nicky :-)

perhaps you can log-in to your account through a web based interface aswell. Here you will be able to read and see who your emails are from before downloading any large attachments.

what kind of email account is it?

in outlook (not express), if you click on the small arrow beside send and recieve, you can choose to "Download inbox headers", which should be what you want.

Check out Magic Mail Monitor. It's free & It will let you look into the mail server and read the headers, mail size, sender etc. and you can decide from there if you just want to delete them, which it can also do for you.

All you need is your pop server name, username & Password. Nothing you don't have access to.

    Hi Nicky -

It sounds like you are using a protocol called POP3, which will download the messages from the server to your local machine. With outlook express, you can configure a connection using IMAP4, which leaves the messages on the server, and it means you can decide which ones to determine. Not all ISP's offer IMAP4 however, but if you want to try it, I can go through it with you. I have a background in Tech Support as you might suspect :D

PM me and I'll give you my contact details.

    Cheers,
    Caimin

If you can tell us the name of the ISP we can probably give you a precise list of options.

    MS Outlook
    Tools/Options/Mail Delivery
Don't download mail over 1 Meg

If you have to as a last resort, and you have a record of your server name, username and password can probably use plain old telnet to browse and delete unwanted mails.

Lines starting with a plus are sent by the server, numbers after the list command are sent by the server. What you type will probably not be dsiplaye to you
    E.g.
    Start > run
    cmd
    telnet mail.isp.com 110
    +OK
    user mailusername
    +OK
    pass mailpassword
    +OK
    list
<This sends back the list of mail ids followed by their size in bytes>
    363 7740
    364 1868
    365 12545168
    366 1820
    367 3386
    368 1370

    top 365 10
<this lists the header and first 10 lines of message number 365>

    dele 365
<deletes the message from the server, if you decide that you don't want it. >

    quit
