Disappearing files!

Okay folks, this seems to be a bit of a weird one so I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this happen and, if so, if you happen to know a fix for it.

Had a lot of stuff stored in the My Documents folder. Was actually using some of these files earlier on. Finished with them, did something else for a while, then came back to look at them again after a while and POOF! Gone! Vanished! Along with some other stuff in there. I didn't do anything to the computer, it wasn't turned off or anything in the meantime. Just went back into My Documents to open them again and found they'd vanished into thin air, so it seems. And yes, before you say it, I did check to see if the "Show hidden files and folders" option was ticked in the Folder Options. And, no, I didn't delete them by accident or anything! :D

One of the first things that popped into my head was "Oh crap, hard drive might be failing. Or maybe a virus or something". So I did a complete virus and spyware scan, came up clean. Then I ran Scandisk and that came up clean as well, no bad sectors or anything. The plot thickens, as they say! :D

Anyone ever seen this before or have any ideas? Luckily the files that vanished weren't particularly important or anything, but it's still a pain to have lost them all the same so I'd liek to try and recover them if possible. Or just even try and work out how they just seemed to have vanished like that for no good reason.

    Yes.
    Hard drive tables sector f`ucked.

Run scandisk with a full surface scan and all options enabled, it will probably find some bad sectors at low locations.

Difficult to workaround if its your system drive.
