Saw this on Digital Spy can't find link!!! thanks to Tubedriver!!!
But the nugget is that you don't have to ring $ky to watch RTE with the same subbed card in different boxes!!!
The long and the short is if you want to watch RTE and other channels in both your home and holiday home (if you have one) all you need to do is bring your card on holiday.
In the past you had to ring $ky to get the card paired in order to watch RTE and some others.
Thought this info mght be of interest.

Who are this "$ky" you speak of?

This is true of many channels. Only the premium channels (such as sky sports/sky movies) need to be paired.

IMO it's not such a big deal - if you want to move your card between two different boxes (such as in the situation you describe) you simply call Sky and give them the relevant box numbers. I see no reason why Sky cannot object to this. If they do... just take the box+card with you to the holiday home.

I think this has been reported in the past, in that RTÉ doesnt have the nuclear-proof encryption that, say Sky Sports has.

There are a few levels of encryption on Sky.

Well I wouldn't fancy having to ring $ky every friday as I headed off to my hideaway in Wexford so I do find it a handy option.

Nice one Greenman. This is a big deal for people with holiday homes, sky are reluctant to re pair cards and will ask why after you do it once or twice and secondly who the hell wants to carry a digibox with them every time they go abroad.

I live in London. My Dad and sisters live up the road.

I got a Irish sub and box a couple of years ago registered at my Dad's house in Ireland and brought it back over here. A year or so ago,I did try and take the card out of his box and put it in my box. I could get TV3 and TG4 but no RTE1 and 2. I'll try again tonight and see of anything has changed.

I feel so daft asking this as lord knows I should know the answer!! Will an expired irish card still get 1-2-3-4~? much the same as the old expired uk cards for itv-ch5 and five?

    If only!!!
    I'd cancel my sub directly!!!!
And I would be happy with 1!!!

Try leaving it in the box overnight.

It was mentioned but items drop out of sight.

The Irish cancelled card is WORSE than a dummy piece of plastic as there are NO Irish FTV (Sky3 anyone or sub only here? Its FTV UK) and the Irish card "hides" FTA channels. Go 501, press red, wait for interactive, put in dummy card / upside down card, press backup and the UK EPG with more channels and all the channels on an Irish cancelled card. Unless Sky3 works on an Irish cancelled card (doubt it).

we had to bring the old panasonic digibox with the mirrored card to our holiday home to watch all the movies and sport, it was just a matter of plugging in the scart dish and power, although it would be easier to buy a box for down there we do loose all the movies and sports.

Tried my dad's irish card in both my uk registered boxes and it now clears RTE1 and 2 as well as TV3 and TG4.

It seems to be working on mine, and it's a cancelled Iriish card. Hardly worth the hassle though just for one poxy channel, I only ever use my ol' skybox for checking when FTA channles have moved transponder and the like. I mostly just use my FTA receiver, it's a lot handier for stuff like the beeb and itv, rather than messing with that longwinded 'other channels' crud on a digibox, it won't even let yoiu flick back and forth thru the 'other channels' ffs.

Doh! silly me. Ignore what I said.
I forgot that I have my card upside down. I use the UK epg as BBC and ITV are on it, which is pretty much what I watch. It eliminates a lot of the 'other channels
