    Hi Angels

I used to work for BoI as a bank assistant. There was an ad in the Indo. I don't think they (or any of the other banks) accept applications outside of specific recruitment times. There was an apptitude test and then an interview. I had previously been a chef and was looking for a regular job (no shifts) and so i had just completed a secretarial/computer course when the ad appeared. So on one hand i had previous work experience, but on the other hand i had no what you might call 'relevant' work experience to working in the bank.

Having said that, i found, and still find in all interviews, that employers are looking for the right attitude from people. The person you are is more important to what the job is. Obviously if you will be working as a clerk or teller or bank assistant you need to be able to say that you have worked in a position or have experience of working with members of the public. That covers a hell of a lot of jobs. Employers generally want to see someone who is self assured, confident (but NOT arrogant), pleasant, nice disposition (smiles a lot), etc. You get the picture.

I actually only worked in the bank for 18 months as the pay was s*ite, and there were virtually no promotional opportunities. So while they promised loads in the advertisement and at the interview, once i actually started work i realised it was all bulls*ite. Loads of us new recruits did not last for more than the 1 year. But it may be all different now.

Just look into it before you decide that you really do want to do it. The bank can send you anywhere. And certainly in Dublin (with no public transport - ok there is transport but it does not move unless you are lucky enough to be on the luas line) then it can be a pain to get to work. And you will have no choice in where they send you.

But if it is what you want to do then best of luck. Keep an eye out for the ads in the national papers. For the BoI the HQ is in College Green in Dublin 2, so if you call them they will be able to advise you. Best of luck. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions. Don't be put off by my experience - and to be honest i learnt a load when i worked in the bank. And all experience leads to you being a more experienced person!

Incidently the pay back in 1996/1997 was £10k!!!!! As i said - sh*te! There were people there who had been bank assistants for 4 years (total lack of promotion prospects) and they had only received somethink like £300 a year for a payrise - so after their 4 years even they were not earning much more than me!! I would presume that it pays more now, but i was SHOCKED at the low rate of pay. They do not take into consideration age, experience, qualifications, etc. Its a flat rate for everyone. I had left school 8 years previously and that was my second lowest paid job EVER!!! So check out the full package before deciding its really what you want to do. On one hand i know it is seen a cushy number - but to be honest it was a cushy number if you started in the bank way back in the 1980's!!

Jees Thanks so much for that,:)

To be honest why i asked is that my boyfriend & me just bought a house & i want to work near to home if i stay where im working now ill be travelling 40mins in & out to work everyday ( and im not even takin 'traffic jams' into consideration here) i absolutley love where i work now, i get on really well with everyone here. If money is ****e i don't think ill bother applying.

I have alot of customer service experience 2 years of it to be exact, i've worked in alot of places handling cash & dealing with people so i know my stuff.

You haven't put me off but im worried about the money side of things here too

    Thanks Again

    Angel:) :)
