With the 80Knot gust at Belmullet yesterday 7th Nov,

Decided to look and see when Belmullet, or any other station had such a strong gust.
Didn't have to go back far!!
Jan 11th to be exact. A gust of 80knots was recorded then at Belmullet.

Looking further back all way to 1958, revealed that actually they do occur most years.
A couple of interesting months are Mar 1991, strongest "gust" was 12Kts at Malin Head, Belmullet had max "gust" of 5 knots, and the following month was not much better with max "gust " of 21 Kts again at Malin Head

Of the stations not mentioned below, strongest gusts are
    Dublin Airport 76 in 12/1997
    Kilkenny 77 in 01/1974
    Mullingar 79 in 09/1961

    Interesting read there mothman.

I'd love to have had the anemometer here for a storm I missed when I was in the states a few years ago, I think it was in october.
It's affects were very localised in that that though other areas were particularally windy, the area between Arklow and Gorey had some kind of an unusual event.
There were trees down everywhere and 2 fields away there were 9 ESB poles in a row just snapped off
There was no electricity here for 48 hours and that was the same for areas like coolgreaney,up to croghan back in towards Gorey and across to tara Hill and Inch.
I remember driving back from Dublin airport and getting down near here and seeing telephone poles on their sides and esb trucks still out repairing.
A neighbour of mine who canoes was up in the wicklow mts the following sunday and noted clusters of trees flattened and then everything ok for a mile and then more clusters of trees flattened.
The local FBD office was busy too as many shed roofs were blown off.

That event never made the news, but it would take a very very strong wind to have snapped the ESB poles.

I'll get the exact date of it later when I've time as I've a record of when i was away, but its not more than 4 years ago.

Wasnt october 2002 was it? Myslef and 2 friends decided stupidly that a hike accross the wicklow mountains to find pubs, get drunk and live in a tent for a week would be good crack (dont ask). We were about 2 days in and there was a raging storm. Tent almost got blown away. It got blown down and only us inside it stopped it from blowing away completly. Then it started raining small fish.
They were about 2 - 3 inches long and we counted about 30 of them around our tent. We called a friend and got him to collect us and went home. That was the end of our trip. And needless to say nobody believed us at all about the fish .
Makes for a great pub conversation between us though. 'Remember the day it rained fish .....' , 'Aye, it was a stormy night' ... 'shut up you lunatics we dont believe you'

Yes my strongest gust on record was on Oct 27th at 71mph. Had a full gale for about 2-3hrs from before 5am till after 7am. Loads of gusts in the high 60s as well.

Also strong wind the previous day with a gale as well with gust to 64mph.

Here's a graph of my wind readings.
Blue line is mean speed, Green is max gust during an archive period which are 5 minutes long.

Dublin Airport had highest gust of month at 0620 on the 27th of 77mph, with a max 10 min mean speed of 53mph.

Other gusts in that storm, were (mph)
    Rosslare 76
    Casement 74 (Mean of 51mph)
    Shannon 70

Wind was from a westerly direction.

    Almost a year later.
In the hour to midnight 8th Jan 2008 Malin Head recorded gust of 94kts, 108mph 173km/h.

In the following hour, to 01am 9th Jan 2008, a mean of 62knots, gust 91kts
    71mph gust 105mph
    114km/h gust 167 km/h

This is 2 knots short of hurricane force.

Correction to above. The gust that was reported as being 94kts at the time was in fact 84kts, so the strongest gust of the night was 91kts during the hour to 1am on 9th January.

An interesting read Mothman. The stats above for 'Hurricane Debbie' look interesting. There are many legends and stories around these here parts about that storm. Would have loved to have been around for it. Apparently according my parents, who where both only kids at the time, the storm started suddenly. My father was in Tuam square and my mother was helping to bring in hay in Dunmore when a "roar" was heard about half an hour before the storm. Both my parents, and others, recal this even though in differnent parts of the county. It went from calm to storm in seconds, and many of the older people I have talked to confirm this.

Also noted was the strange "yellow glow/haze" in the atmosphere hours before the gale hit. There is still evidence of the damage today from that great day, with relics of some great oaks that were felled still around here.

Anybody else have any stories on this storm...?
